Quang Ngai: Floods cause bridge collapse, isolating about 250 households

On the morning of November 2, Mr. Pham Quang Su, Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Minh Commune, Quang Ngai Province, said: Prolonged heavy rain and strong floodwaters caused the Sung bridge in the commune to collapse on the night of November 1, isolating about 250 households in the area.

Sung tree bridge in Phuoc An village is the only bridge across Sung tree stream to Chau Long, Chau Binh and Chau Loc hamlets. According to Mr. Pham Quang Su, due to heavy rain, floodwaters on Tra Bong river rose again and flooded into fields and residential areas, causing the Sung tree bridge to collapse. Currently, about 250 households living in hamlets on the other side of the bridge are isolated. In addition, this is also the only route leading to hamlets and T10 prison.

"The local government is coordinating with the provincial Irrigation Department to assess the landslide incident and report to competent authorities to have a plan to install a temporary bridge so that people can travel back and forth," said Mr. Su.
Previously, due to prolonged heavy rain, more than 30m of the dam body of Nam Binh Thuong reservoir in Nam Binh 1 village, Binh Son commune collapsed, causing the risk of dam failure.

Therefore, the local government mobilized militia and military forces to build 2,000 sandbags to reinforce the dam body of the lake to prevent landslides. In addition, the local government also sent forces to closely monitor this landslide site to have a response plan.

Nam Binh Thuong reservoir was built in 1979, the dam body is an earth dam, in recent years the reservoir has seriously degraded. Mr. Vo Quoc Nam, Head of the Economic Department of Binh Son commune said: This landslide is very dangerous. If not promptly reinforced and handled, the risk of dam failure will affect 600 households living near the dam body.

"This repair is only temporary. In the long term, the local government will recommend that the competent authorities allocate funds to reinforce the dam body, ensuring the safety of the project and the safety of lives and property of people living downstream of the dam," Mr. Nam emphasized.
