Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said Beijing “stands ready to work with Spain to seize the opportunity of this visit, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and consolidate the bilateral strategic partnership.”
While the European Union remains cautious with China, Spain has taken a more open approach. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has visited China three times in recent years. During his visit in September 2024, he announced a reversal of Spain’s stance, no longer supporting the EU’s plan to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
Several major Chinese investment projects have been confirmed in Spain, including plants for battery maker CATL and renewable energy group Envision.
