North Korea is cautiously welcoming foreign tourists after five years of border closures (since January 2020) due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Pyongyang is currently only welcoming a limited number of tourists to the Rason Special Economic Zone, 100% of which must go through a number of licensed travel agencies.

February 22, Kyodo Tours to North Korea via China will resume next week, according to China-based travel agencies.

The earliest tour will be organized by a travel agency to Rason from February 24. Meanwhile, Koryo Tours (based in Beijing) plans to organize tours from March, in which guests will visit North Korean attractions, schools, factories and banks.

As there is no airport in the area, visitors will be taken by bus across the border from the Chinese city of Yanji.

The expert from the DPRK said the border crossing would go smoothly because the two sides had worked out the details beforehand: “Technically, Rason does not require a visa. The procedure for applying for an entry permit is the same as for a visa, but faster. When you cross the border, your name and details will appear on a list held by Chinese customs and North Korean customs.”

According to Independent, For Koryo tours, visitors are required to attend a 1-hour pre-trip briefing, where the company will explain the rules, protocols, and safety precautions for visitors to understand when traveling to North Korea.

Additionally, visitors to Rason are advised not to bring Korean-made food, business cards, or recording devices. Strict health measures, including wearing masks and temperature checks, will still be in place upon arrival.

Koryo Tours will run two trips a month from March onwards. The longest itinerary is 5 days and 4 nights in North Korea, priced at 705 euros.
