Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam E-commerce Panorama Forum 2025, Ms. Lai Viet Anh - Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy emphasized that if digital transformation is considered one of the new growth drivers, the digital economy is identified as one of the three strategic pillars of digital transformation, with e-commerce as the central driving force.
According to the survey results conducted by the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, in 2024, the size of Vietnam's e-commerce market will reach about 22 billion USD, growing by more than 25%; the proportion of e-commerce accounts for over 9% of total retail revenue. However, Vietnam's e-commerce is facing new, more difficult and challenging contexts.
That is, global economic growth is showing signs of slowing down, inflationary pressures and geopolitical risks are increasing, especially unpredictable changes in trade policies of major countries. This situation raises many issues to consider regarding the development orientation and contribution of e-commerce to the economy in the coming time.
The world is witnessing the rapid development of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI). From personalizing user experience, automating operations, supporting customer care, analyzing consumer data, to forecasting market trends, AI helps businesses save time, costs and increase efficiency many times over.
“Consumer behavior is also changing, which is expected to put great pressure on the development of e-commerce. Therefore, businesses need to quickly update these new trends to catch up with the trend and not fall behind competitors,” said Ms. Viet Anh.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung - Chairman of the E-commerce Association, AI is no longer strange to businesses participating in the e-commerce market. With the support of businesses providing AI solutions, many businesses have promoted the application of AI in business, bringing positive results.
However, currently, the application of AI in e-commerce also has some limitations and shortcomings. This may come from the fact that businesses have not fully accessed AI or that AI tools and applications do not fully meet the specific requirements of businesses.
Sharing more about the role of AI in e-commerce, Ms. Le Minh Trang - Senior Manager of NielsenIQ Vietnam Co., Ltd. said that the use of AI has a great impact on shopping activities and e-commerce spending. AI affects the decision to find suitable products and services for consumers, shortening the distance between distributors and consumers.
AI is also a powerful assistant that helps businesses reach users faster, more effectively, and promote higher sales in e-commerce.
