Determined not to let forest fires happen

In recent times, localities and forest owners in Khanh Hoa province have proactively implemented and achieved many positive results in forest management and protection, especially forest fire prevention and fighting (PCCCR). In order to effectively protect forests, the Provincial People's Committee has directed localities and forest owners to absolutely not be subjective or negligent, to carry out forest protection well, especially to prevent forest fires.

Many areas are at risk of fire.

Khanh Hoa is one of the localities with a large forest area, with more than 245,598 hectares of forest. Of which, the forest area under the planning of 3 types of forest is more than 214,967 hectares (nearly 177,811 hectares of natural forest, more than 33,501 hectares of planted forest and 3,655 hectares of planted forest but not meeting the criteria for becoming a forest); the forest area outside the planning of 3 types of forest is more than 30,631 hectares (nearly 11.4 hectares of natural forest, more than 28,833 hectares of planted forest, more than 1,786 hectares of planted forest but not meeting the criteria for becoming a forest). In addition, in the province there are nearly 71,523 hectares of unforested areas under the planning of 3 types of forest. In recent years, thanks to proactive implementation of forest protection and management, especially PCCCR during the peak of the dry season, deforestation and illegal logging have been reduced, and there are no more hot spots for deforestation in the area; The number of fires causing damage to forest resources has been reduced. However, the whole province is currently in the peak of the dry season, leading to a very high risk of forest fires. From now until the end of August, the whole province has nearly 51,112 hectares of forest at high risk of fire, including more than 20,433 hectares of natural forest and more than 30,678 hectares of planted forest in localities.

According to Mr. Do Anh Thy - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, through inspection, localities and forest owners in the whole province have proactively implemented forest protection and fire prevention and fighting according to regulations, so the number of violations in the forestry sector has decreased. Since the beginning of the year, only 24 violations have been detected in the province, a decrease of 26 cases compared to the same period last year; no forest fires have occurred in the province. Localities and units have proactively identified areas at high risk of fire, proactively deployed technical measures for fire prevention and fighting; promoted propaganda, raised awareness of responsibility in the implementation of legal regulations on forest management, protection and development, fire prevention and fighting, etc.

Focus on implementing forest protection solutions

Although forest protection and PCCCR have been proactively implemented, forest protection in the area still has many potential risks of hot spots of deforestation and illegal logging. Therefore, units and localities need to strengthen coordination to better implement forest protection and PCCCR, especially when forest fires occur. At the same time, strengthen propaganda andeducation to raise awareness and responsibility of people, especially households living in forests and near forests in implementing regulations on forest protection, development and PCCCR. In particular, strictly control the use of fire in forests and near forests by people, especially slash-and-burn farming activities and vegetation treatment; promptly prevent and strictly handle acts of using fire that pose a high risk of causing forest fires during the peak of the dry season. In addition, units and localities need to strengthen inspection and strictly handle violations in the forestry sector; Provide means and tools to serve the work of PCCCR; strictly maintain the information and reporting regime on forest protection and PCCCR work to serve the work of effective direction and management; handle the responsibility of the head of the agency or organization if there is a lack of responsibility in leadership and direction leading to the occurrence of forest fires.

To continue effectively implementing forest management and protection and fire prevention and fighting in the province, the Provincial People's Committee has recently issued a document directing the provincial departments, specialized agencies, localities and forest owners to continue effectively implementing forest management and protection and fire prevention and fighting according to previous instructions of the Prime Minister and the Provincial People's Committee. The Provincial People's Committee requests localities and forest owners to urgently overcome the shortcomings and limitations in current forest management and protection in their localities and units. To respond to the high risk of forest fires during the peak of the dry season this year, units and localities must arrange forces to be on duty 24/24 hours, including holidays and days off; strengthen inspection, control and on duty when there are warnings of level IV and level V forest fires, especially in areas identified as having a high risk of fire; absolutely do not be subjective or negligent, ensuring that forest fires do not occur.
