Water celery successfully grown in Bac Lieu, fragrant and easy to crave for rice, 7 times more profitable than growing rice

Phuoc Long District (Ca Mau Province) currently has 44 hectares of land for growing water celery, mainly concentrated in two communes: Vinh Thanh and Vinh Phu Dong. From the economic efficiency, Phuoc Long District has built a water celery production area and built a collective brand for water celery.

The cultivation time of water celery is short, from 60 - 75 days/crop, so farmers in Phuoc Long district can grow 3 - 4 crops/year.

Water celery yield is from 38 - 40 tons/ha/year, profit is from 50 - 65 million VND/ha/crop (depending on time), 5 - 7 times higher than rice cultivation.

Mr. Huynh Trung Thu - Director of 8/3 Cooperative (Vinh Thanh commune, Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province), said: "The cooperative organizes the purchase of water celery from members and people in the commune.

Every day, the cooperative supplies about 30 tons of celery to traders at wholesale markets in and outside the province, mostly in Ho Chi Minh City ...

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province: The cultivation time of water celery is short, the soil and vegetable roots can be utilized for many years, reducing part of the cost of seeds, giving quite high profits, from 150 - 200 million VND/ha/year.

Besides, the strong consumer market and easy output help create jobs for many local workers...

From the economic efficiency of the model, Phuoc Long district (Bac Lieu province) has built a vegetable production area and built a collective brand for water celery.

To date, water celery has been recognized as an OCOP product and is sold in supermarkets in the province. The district is currently considering expanding the area of water celery cultivation in the near future…
