Water celery successfully grown in Bac Lieu, fragrant and easy to crave for rice, 7 times more profitable than growing rice

Phuoc Long district (Ca Mau province) currently has 44 hectares of land dedicated to growing water celery, mainly concentrated in two communes: Vinh Thanh and Vinh Phu Dong. Based on the economic benefits, Phuoc Long district has developed a water celery production area and established a collective brand for water celery.

Water spinach cultivation has a short growing season, from 60 to 75 days per crop, so farmers in Phuoc Long district can grow 3 to 4 crops per year.

Water spinach yields 38-40 tons/ha/year, generating profits of 50-65 million VND/ha/crop (depending on the time of year), which is 5-7 times higher than rice cultivation.

Mr. Huynh Trung Thu, Director of the 8/3 Cooperative (Vinh Thanh commune, Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province), said: "The cooperative organizes the purchase of water spinach from its members and people in the commune."

Every day, the cooperative supplies about 30 tons of water spinach to traders at wholesale markets inside and outside the province, mostly in Ho Chi Minh City...

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province: The cultivation time for water spinach is short, allowing for the utilization of the land and vegetable roots for many years, reducing some seed costs, and yielding a relatively high profit of 150 - 200 million VND/ha/year.

In addition, the strong consumer market and easy sales help create jobs for many local workers...

Based on the economic benefits of the model, Phuoc Long district (Bac Lieu province) has developed a vegetable production area and established a collective brand for water spinach.

To date, water celery has been recognized as an OCOP product and is being sold in supermarkets throughout the province. Currently, the district is considering expanding the area for growing water celery in the near future…
