Coach Martinez faced criticism. |
The former AS Roma midfielder called Martinez a "terrible coach" with "nonsense" methods, and said the Spanish strategist was the reason why Belgium's "golden generation" declined.
“I proved my ability at Euro 2016. But when Martinez arrived, he dropped me without giving a convincing reason. What he said was just nonsense. In my opinion, he doesn't understand football and is a bad coach," Nainggolan said.
The 36-year-old believes that if the Belgian Football Federation had invested in the right person for the coaching position, the team could have won a major title.
Nainggolan also criticized the way Martinez operated the Belgian national team during the 2016–2022 period. He affirmed that the team “did not have a clear style”, only depending on the brilliance of stars like Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne or Romelu Lukaku.
“De Bruyne wanted to play in midfield, but he made him play as a right winger. As for me, he didn't even talk to me because he didn't want me involved," Nainggolan said.
Martinez is currently leading Portugal in their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Previously, at Euro 2024, the former Everton coach only helped the team reach the quarter-finals before being eliminated by France on penalties.
With a squad of top players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva, Martinez is under great pressure to help Portugal compete for the title.
