The tech world is buzzing with news of a "dream" collaboration between Jony Ive, former Apple design director, and OpenAI - the giant behind ChatGPT.

At the heart of this ambitious project is a new AI device, expected to go into mass production in 2027. Designed for “ambient intelligence,” the device will likely use a smartphone as a display.

Notably, famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that this device could be assembled in Vietnam, to avoid dependence on China's supply chain.

"The new AI hardware device that Jony Ive is working on with OpenAI is expected to be mass produced in 2027. This product will be assembled in Vietnam," Mr. Kuo wrote on X on May 23.

Ming-Chi Kuo is a well-known analyst who often makes accurate predictions about the supply chain, especially with Apple products. In this article, he gives some comments about this product.

According to Mr. Kuo, the device may be slightly larger than the “Ai Pin” and feature a compact and elegant design similar to Apple’s iPod Shuffle. The AI Pin, a wearable device with integrated GPT-4, was launched by Humane with the ambition of replacing smartphones in the future, but was discontinued earlier this year.

However, Mr. Kuo noted that the final design and specifications could still change before officially entering mass production.

Kuo also predicts that the primary use of the device will be around the user’s neck. The device will be equipped with advanced cameras and microphones to detect and understand the surrounding environment, but will not integrate a display function.

Instead, the device will leverage the powerful display capabilities of a smartphone or PC through connectivity, delivering a seamless and efficient overall AI experience.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's assessment of Vietnam's role in the technology product supply chain is being assessed by major technology sites as well-founded.

This is further reinforced as Vietnam increasingly asserts its important position on the global technology manufacturing map. For example, in its financial report in early May, the "giant" Apple revealed that its other devices sold in the US market in the current fiscal quarter were mainly produced in India and Vietnam.

OpenAI and Jony Ive’s design company, known as “io,” are aiming to make the device an everyday staple in people’s lives. Not a pair of bulky smart glasses, but a smart, compact companion that’s convenient enough to sit on a desk or slip into a pocket.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is said to have shared the initial ideas with his team, describing it as a potential “third core device,” ready to join laptops and smartphones in modern life.

While the project is still in its early stages of development and final specifications have yet to be confirmed, the combination of Jony Ive's legendary design skills and OpenAI's groundbreaking artificial intelligence capabilities is expected to set a whole new standard in personal computing, ushering in a promising era of technology.
