At the end of October 2025, after giving birth at the Provincial General Hospital, Ms. Vi Bich Thao, in Ban Gieng village, registered for her child to have heel blood drawn and screened for diseases. Ms. Thao shared: After listening to propaganda many times, I understood the meaning of prenatal and newborn screening to help detect early risks to the fetus, I proactively went to the health station for regular ultrasound and registered for all tests. On October 27, 2025, I gave birth and registered for newborn screening to ensure my child's health.
Ms. Thao's story is also a testament to the change in awareness of many women in Cao Loc commune about prenatal and newborn screening. Mr. Hua Van Dong, Head of Cao Loc Commune Health Station, said: In order to create a change in people's awareness about prenatal and newborn screening, recently, the Commune Health Station has reviewed the list of pregnant women in 13/13 villages; developed a propaganda and mobilization plan suitable for each village. Communication sessions on prenatal and newborn screening are integrated into regular vaccination days, activities of women's associations, youth unions, village meetings and to each household.
From the beginning of 2025 to now, the Commune Health Station has organized integrated communication at vaccination sessions at the station for 18 sessions with more than 860 listeners; integrated communication at meetings for 16 sessions with 390 listeners. At the same time, in coordination with relevant organizations and units, integrated communication has been organized in 11 sessions attracting 530 attendees; thematic talks in villages and hamlets have been organized in 72 sessions with more than 2,600 listeners.
Along with the form of concentrated communication, the population collaborators in the villages of the third region still persistently visit each household, especially poor, near-poor households, and ethnic minority families, to explain to the people: prenatal and newborn screening not only helps detect some diseases and genetic defects early, but also receives State support for policy groups, reducing the financial burden if the child unfortunately gets sick. Since the beginning of 2025, population collaborators have organized 176 visits to households to propagate and advise more than 600 listeners.
Mr. Vy Van Thong, a population collaborator in Ban Hec village, said: Propaganda about prenatal and newborn screening in a village in the third region like Ban Hec cannot be done only in sessions or batches, but must be done regularly and persistently. People work in the fields all day and only come home at night, so we have to be flexible with our hours. We have to explain so that people understand the real benefits: screening is not to "detect diseases" but to know the risks in advance, so that mothers and babies can receive timely intervention.
Thanks to the perseverance of population collaborators like Mr. Thong, information about prenatal and newborn screening has spread more widely in the area, contributing to forming the habit of regular pregnancy check-ups and safe reproductive health care right in remote and border villages of Cao Loc commune. From the beginning of 2025 to now, the whole commune has 53 pregnant mothers, of which 49 people have undergone prenatal screening, reaching a rate of 92.4%; 36 newborn screening cases out of a total of 40 newborns, reaching a rate of 90%, exceeding the target set by the province: by 2025, the prenatal screening rate will reach about 65%, newborn screening will reach 58%.
In the coming time, the commune will continue to maintain flexible communication forms, take advantage of the loudspeaker system and digital platforms, and strive to have more and more pregnant women and newborns access screening services, contributing to building a healthy future generation and improving the quality of the population in the area.
