Landslide at a hydroelectric project, 5 people missing, 4 injured

At around 10:30 a.m. on May 16, at Ta Pao Ho 1A Hydropower Plant, Si Lo Lau Commune, Phong Tho District, Lai Chau Province, a landslide occurred, causing serious damage to people and property.

At the time of the incident, 9 workers of Dung Phuc Loc Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (headquartered in Nghe An province) were clearing the foundation pit under the hydroelectric dam when the negative slope of the road through Mo Si San commune collapsed, causing rocks and soil to flow down and bury 5 people missing and 4 others injured.

Immediately after the incident, the construction unit reported to the authorities to organize rescue. Lai Chau province mobilized more than 100 people from the police, army, and hydropower workers to search for the victims. However, due to the possibility of landslides, the search was difficult, and the missing victims have not been found yet. 4 injured people were taken to Lai Chau General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Deputy Director of Lai Chau Provincial Police Sung A Sua directed rescue forces at the scene to quickly remove buried victims from the landslide site.

The cause of the incident has not yet been determined. However, the heavy rains in Lai Chau province over the past two days have caused the soil on the slope to absorb enough water, leading to the landslide.

The Ta Pao Ho 1A & 1B hydropower project cluster is a series of adjacent hydropower cascades on the Ta Pao Ho stream, with Ta Pao Ho 1A upstream and Ta Pao Ho 1B downstream, with a capacity of 24MW and a total investment of VND911 billion. The cluster is about 90km from Lai Chau city center.
