Why did durian prices increase to a record level at the end of the year?
A survey of units quoting prices for durian export purchases in the Mekong Delta region on December 30 showed that the price of Monthong durian has exceeded VND200,000/kg, reaching VND202,000 - 205,000/kg.
Monthong durian grade A (yellow flesh, powder, enough sweetness, 2.7 boxes, weighing from 1.8 - 5.2 kg) is purchased at 205,000 VND/kg, grade B (2.5 boxes, from 1.6 - 5.7 kg) is 185,000 VND/kg. With Ri6, the purchase price of grade A also reaches 127,000 VND/kg, grade B from 105,000 - 107,000 VND/kg.
Meanwhile, the price of Ri6 and Thai durian remains stable for both bulk and beautiful types. Specifically, the price of Ri6 durian in bulk is fluctuating between 60,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, while the price of Thai durian in bulk is 70,000 - 80,000 VND.
Beautiful Ri6 durian is being purchased at 140,000 - 144,000 VND/kg, while beautiful Thai durian is priced about 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg higher.
Durian prices are rising due to increased export demand.

Durian prices are rising due to increased export demand. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VinaFruit) said that the current high price of durian is to meet the demand for the Chinese Lunar New Year.
In addition, the output of off-season durian in the Western provinces is not much while other provinces such as Gia Lai, Dak Lak , Dak Nong, Lam Dong ... do not have off-season durian to sell, this also affects the purchase price of exported durian. Even in the international market, currently only Vietnam has off-season durian for export.
Experts note that export demand is high, so exporters must ensure traceability and food safety of fruits such as testing for pesticide residues... to avoid returns, which would affect the domestic durian brand.
So far, the Chinese market consumes more than 90% of the global durian production. Since 2018, durian imports into China have increased from 430,000 tons (worth 1.1 billion USD ) to 1.38 million tons (worth 6.2 billion USD ) in the period from January to September this year alone.
Chinese people love durian, but the country has only successfully grown it on Hainan Island, so it depends on imports, mainly from Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc.
In the third quarter, Vietnam exported durian worth 1.342 billion USD to China, far exceeding Thailand's 878.95 million USD .
In October, Vietnam exported 332.79 million USD , compared to 132.37 million USD of Thailand.
In November, Vietnam exported 82.85 million USD , while Thailand only reached 65.21 million USD .
According to Vinafruit's forecast, Vietnam's durian export value will reach 4 billion USD next year, of which up to 90% is for the Chinese market.
According to Chinese customs statistics, in the first 10 months of this year, the country imported nearly 1.5 million tons of durian, with a total value of nearly 6.7 billion USD .
Vietnam is producing nearly 1.2 million tons of durian per year on a total cultivated area of 154,000 hectares nationwide and this output is forecast to grow by 15% per year.
According to VinaFruit, there are currently a number of subjects who have fraudulently copied the codes of growing areas and durian packing facilities through authorization contracts, using codes with homemade seals, fake signatures, etc. to bypass authorities to clear durian shipments to China.
This serious violation not only directly affects the reputation of the Vietnamese durian industry, loses the trust of Chinese and international consumers, but also causes great damage to genuine durian producers and exporters.
China is currently the largest import market for Vietnamese durian, accounting for more than 90% of total export turnover. According to statistics, as of November 2024, Vietnam exported more than 3.13 billion USD worth of durian, an increase of 44.3% over the same period last year.
In 2024, Vietnam's durian exports are expected to reach 3.2 billion USD, up 40% year-on-year. In 2025, exports are expected to continue to grow as China opens its doors to durian processed products such as durian pulp and puree, creating higher added value than fresh products.
