Scottie Scheffler is halfway to his third major Grand Slam title, and his performance at Royal Portrush is proving why he is the dominant golfer of the modern era.
The world number one golfer just had the best round of the 2025 Open, shooting a 64 (-7) in harsh weather conditions in Northern Ireland. His total score of -10 after two rounds puts Scheffler in sole possession of the lead at the final major of the year, just one stroke ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick.
Even more remarkably, this was Scheffler's lowest score in a major tournament, a new milestone in his already impressive career. Since winning his first Masters title in 2022, he has held the lead or tied for the lead in a major tournament 10 times, out of a total of 62 rounds.
One such example was at the PGA Championship last May, where Scheffler triumphed after leading after 54 holes. Now, he is once again proving that he not only plays consistently, but also knows how to make a breakthrough at the right moment.

In addition to his already renowned tee shots and iron shots, Scheffler also displayed impressive putting performance at this year's Open. He ranked second overall after 36 holes in strokes gained putting (putting efficiency on the green).
This also marks the first time Scheffler has led a round at The Open, despite having participated in the tournament five times. His previous best result was a tie for seventh place at Royal Troon in 2024.
"I felt like I hit more fairways today than yesterday, had some really good iron shots, and capitalized on my putting opportunities," Scheffler shared.
Despite having to play in heavy rain at times, the 29-year-old American star maintained his composure and precision. He recorded a total of 8 birdies and only made one bogey on the 11th hole.

After five birdies on the first ten holes, Scheffler missed a nearly six-meter putt and bogeyed the 11th hole. But he quickly redeemed himself with two birdies on the two par-3 holes (13 and 16), then took the lead with a putt of over four meters on the 17th hole.
This marks the 19th time in his career that Scheffler has led or tied for the lead after 36 holes in a PGA Tour event, and the fourth time in 2025.
“When I went onto the course, it was still sunny, and I was wearing a short-sleeved shirt. But just a few minutes later, dark clouds rolled in and it started raining heavily,” Scheffler recalled. “Luckily, the rain only lasted for 4 or 5 holes, and I made good use of the opportunities when the weather improved.”
