The agricultural sector recommends that people choose quality seeds with clear origins to ensure long-term effectiveness.

Bustling season of selling seedlings

In key coffee growing districts such as Chu Pah, Dak Doa, Chu Se, Chu Prong and Pleiku City, nurseries are entering the peak period of selling seedlings. After many years of high and stable coffee prices, the demand for replanting and expanding acreage is increasing. Not only local people, but also traders from Kon Tum , Laos and Cambodia have come to order seedlings right from the beginning of the nursery season.

Mr. Nguyen The Minh - Director of Nghia Hoa Agricultural Service Cooperative (Chu Pah district) - said: All 400 thousand seedlings, although not yet ready for sale, have been ordered by traders and people.

“As a unit with many years of experience in the field of seedling cultivation, especially coffee varieties, we are trusted by farmers in and outside the province and come to place orders. All seeds are supplied from the Eakmat Tay Nguyen Institute ( Dak Lak province) with clear invoices and documents.

Currently, all of these coffee varieties (mainly TRS1, TRS4, TRS9) are growing and developing well, have 3 pairs of leaves and are expected to be sold when they reach 5 pairs of leaves. Although demand is high, the price of seeds and input materials has also increased, but the Cooperative is selling at 5-6 thousand VND/tree, equal to or 1-2 thousand VND/tree higher than last year depending on the region and area" - Director of Nghia Hoa Agricultural Service Cooperative said.

Similarly, the nursery of Anh Phuc Seedlings Facility (Hamlet 2, Tan Binh Commune, Dak Doa District) is also quite busy with workers weeding, caring for, and loading seedlings for sale. To meet the needs of the people, this year, this facility has grown more than 100,000 coffee seedlings, double last year's increase.

According to Mr. Tran Van Phuc - Owner of the facility: Although the number of buyers in the past few days has not been much, mainly people buying for replanting, he is not too worried about the output because most of the orders have been placed by people and traders since the beginning of the nursery season.

Gia Lai currently has about 106 thousand hectares of coffee, of which the area in the business stage is more than 94 thousand hectares, the average yield is 33.1 quintals/ha, the output is more than 312 thousand tons.

In recent years, coffee trees have made an important contribution to the transformation of the province's crop structure when forming concentrated raw material areas in districts such as Dak Doa, Ia Grai, Chu Pah, Chu Prong, Mang Yang, Duc Co, Chu Se, Chu Puh and Pleiku City.

However, with the price of coffee increasing and remaining stable in recent years, people have begun to focus on investing in care, replanting and expanding new planting areas. This poses many risks as the obvious lessons from some crops such as pepper and passion fruit have brought.

Tighten management of seedling quality

In addition to advising people not to rush to grow coffee on unsuitable land areas lacking irrigation water, the local agricultural sector has also stepped up propaganda to encourage people to use quality seeds in production to improve productivity and quality of agricultural products. In particular, it is recommended that people use seeds produced and sold at nurseries in the province that are certified to meet production and business conditions.

The local agricultural sector regularly coordinates with relevant units to organize inspections of all production and business establishments of plant varieties in the area. From there, promptly prevent varieties of unknown origin, without invoices, documents, labels, etc. right from the nursery, to avoid people planting varieties that do not ensure quality, causing damage to property, time and effort.

According to Mr. Phan Van Phuong - Vice Chairman of Tan Binh Commune People's Committee (Dak Doa District), coffee is one of the main crops of the locality with about 1,400 hectares (of which, people in neighboring localities occupy more than half of the area).

In recent years, thanks to good propaganda work, people's awareness has been increasingly improved, especially in choosing quality plant varieties and applying science and technology to production. In addition to choosing to buy seeds from reputable establishments with clear origins, many households also buy quality seeds to grow themselves to ensure standard sources as well as good adaptation to climatic conditions.

Along with that, the commune also does a good job of coordinating with functional units to inspect and supervise plant variety production and trading establishments in the area.

Mr. Nguyen Kim Anh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Doa district, informed: In 2025, the district plans to replant 300 hectares of coffee. In addition to closely inspecting seed production facilities, the district also coordinates with businesses to support people in purchasing high-quality seedlings at preferential prices.

Specifically, Nestlé Vietnam has supported people to buy 300,000 seedlings recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, 1,000 VND/tree lower than the market price and an additional 100 VND/tree for transportation costs.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Doan Ngoc Co - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment - said: In the past 2 years, the price of green coffee beans on the market has continuously increased, so the nurseries have also "lived well". In 2024 alone, the whole province replanted and grafted more than 1,840 hectares, reaching about 76% of the original plan of 2,400 hectares. There are 4 localities that have achieved and exceeded the replanting plan, including: Mang Yang, Chu Pah, Ia Grai, Duc Co.

The reason some localities failed to meet their plans is because the weather is increasingly unpredictable due to the impact of climate change, land degradation due to overuse of fertilizers and chemicals...

“According to the plan, in 2025, the whole province will continue to replant about 2,400 hectares of coffee. To ensure the completion of the plan, the Department of Agriculture and Environment regularly propagates and mobilizes people to replant and graft to use new coffee varieties with high yield, quality, pest resistance and drought tolerance.

At the same time, farmers are advised to switch to other crops that use less irrigation water. Replicate intensive coffee growing models, apply high technology to coffee production according to 4C and Organic standards, etc. Mobilize resources to support farmers in replanting and grafting, associated with building the Gia Lai coffee brand.

In particular, strengthen the inspection of seedling quality, resolutely and strictly handle coffee production and breeding facilities that do not ensure quality, do not meet the conditions, and do not let people use poor quality coffee varieties" - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment proposed solutions.
