These days, the 1,500 square meter plot of land of Bao Ngan nursery (Group 1, Ia Ly town, Chu Pah district) is packed with coffee seedlings and various fruit trees. Mr. Phan Van Ly, the nursery owner, said: Every year, during the rainy season, people's demand for seedlings increases, concentrated in May and June. Therefore, since the beginning of November last year, he imported seeds and embryos to incubate and care for them in order to supply the market in time for this peak season.
In particular, this year, understanding the high demand for buying seedlings for coffee replanting, he increased the number of seedlings of all kinds to more than 80,000, 20% higher than last year. Of which, coffee seedlings accounted for the largest number of over 70,000 trees, followed by durian seedlings of more than 10,000 trees and other fruit tree varieties of more than 1,000 trees.
According to Mr. Ly, to ensure the quality of seedlings when supplied to the market, he imports seeds and seed embryos from reputable domestic establishments and only selects high-quality varieties that have been recognized and circulated by competent authorities in the area. Specifically, for coffee varieties, he imports seeds from the Eakmat Coffee Research and Technology Transfer Center (Eakamat Center, located in Dak Lak province) and then grows and sells them himself, mainly high-quality varieties that have been effectively grown by people such as: dwarf green, TR4, Thien Truong. For fruit trees, he imports seed embryos from nurseries of cooperatives in Ben Tre province. Thanks to that, customers trust and order seedlings at the nursery more and more.
Coming to buy seedlings at Bao Ngan nursery, Mr. Ro Cham Niep (Mun village, Ia Ly town, Chu Pah district) shared: His family has 2 hectares of coffee planted before 2000. In 2019 and 2020, he bought 1,500 dwarf green and TR4 seedlings at Bao Ngan nursery to replant 1.5 hectares. Through monitoring, the replanted coffee area has high resistance, is less susceptible to pests and diseases and grows well, in 2024 alone, it will yield more than 5 tons of beans. "From the above results, this year, I will continue to go to the nursery to buy coffee seedlings to replant the remaining 5 sao. At the same time, I will buy some more areca trees and fruit trees to plant along the bank of the plot to block the wind for the coffee garden. Hopefully the garden will grow well and bring high productivity" - Mr. Niep said.
Similarly, these days, Tinh nursery (Yen The ward, Pleiku city) also has quite a lot of customers coming to buy seedlings of all kinds to plant. Mr. Tinh - the owner of the nursery - said: Like every year, this year, his family provides the market with about 30,000 coffee seedlings, 20,000 pepper seedlings and more than 3,000 fruit trees of all kinds. Of which, for coffee, he imports seeds from Eakmat Center for planting, while fruit trees are imported from agricultural cooperatives in Ben Tre province.
“With 30 years of experience in the profession, in addition to providing the market with quality seedlings, we also research the techniques of planting and caring for the crops we are trading to guide people when needed. Therefore, many customers after buying seedlings at our nursery see the effectiveness, they come back to buy more and introduce more to friends and relatives. Therefore, almost every year, the imported seedlings are consumed,” said Mr. Tinh.
According to statistics, the province currently has about 240 establishments producing and trading seedlings. To ensure effective production and business activities, in recent times, many establishments have focused on importing quality seedlings recognized by specialized agencies, with clear origins and sources to supply to the market. Therefore, in recent years, instead of ordering seedlings from localities, many farmers in the province have chosen to buy seedlings from reputable establishments in the province to serve production.
Mr. Hoang Thi Tho - Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection - informed: Currently, Gia Lai is entering the rainy season, so the demand for buying seedlings to replant coffee and produce crops is very high. Therefore, localities need to inform, disseminate and post a list of organizations and individuals producing and trading qualified plant varieties on the unit's website so that people know and choose to use them to ensure quality.
In addition, it is recommended that people should choose to buy seedlings at establishments that ensure the following conditions: having plant varieties or being authorized by organizations or individuals with plant varieties that have been granted a decision to recognize circulation or have self-declared the circulation of plant varieties; having or renting locations, infrastructure, and equipment according to national standards or facility standards on plant variety production methods; organizations and individuals trading in plant varieties have legal transaction locations and ensure traceability of the origin of plant variety lots...
In addition, localities in the province need to effectively implement information work, promptly disseminate legal regulations on plant varieties; continue to develop plans and organize the implementation of inspections of production and trading of plant varieties and propose handling and handling of violations according to the provisions of law. Thereby, to raise awareness, consciousness, responsibility and help organizations and individuals comply with legal regulations in the process of production, trading and use of seedlings in the area, contributing to the effective implementation of production programs in the area.
