Soc Trang plans to create the largest ST rice painting in Vietnam and set a record for shrimp dishes at this year's Ooc Om Boc Moon Festival.
Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Huynh Thi Diem Ngoc said today that the two records are expected to be set during the Ooc Om Boc Festival - Ngo Boat Race in Soc Trang province, taking place over three days, November 25-27.
The detailed plan for creating the largest ST rice painting in Vietnam and setting a Vietnam Guinness record with 223 dishes made from shrimp has not been revealed.
The Ooc Om Boc Festival or Moon Worship Festival usually takes place on the full moon day of October every year with main activities such as Ngo boat racing, Moon Worship ceremony, Loi Protip competition (water lantern release) and Ca Hau boat performance.

In addition, the festival also has activities such as a fair promoting regional specialties, street food , art exhibitions, and ethnic costumes.
Soc Trang has a large aquaculture area, with more than 79,000 hectares in 2022, an output of nearly 378,000 tons, mainly tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp. Besides aquaculture, the province has a large rice growing area, including the ST25 variety that won first prize at the 2019 World's Best Rice Contest.
In 2022, the province's total rice output will be more than 2 million tons, of which the output of specialty and high-quality rice accounts for nearly 92% of the total output with an area of about 45,000 hectares. The ST25 variety alone has an area of about 15,000 hectares, with an average yield of 6.5 tons per hectare.
The Ooc Om Boc Festival (also known as the Moon worshiping or flat rice casting festival) of the Khmer people in the South is an annual occasion for people to thank the Moon god - the god who takes care of the weather and helps people have a good harvest. Soc Trang is the province with the largest Khmer population in the country, with more than 400,000 people, accounting for about 30% of the province's population. In 2021, the festival will not be held due to Covid-19.
