What are the regulations of airlines around the world regarding carry-on baggage?

Carry-on baggage is the items that passengers are allowed to bring into the aircraft cabin, with free allowances depending on the airline and ticket class. In addition to the main baggage, passengers are usually allowed to bring 1 small bag or personal accessory.

In the world, major airlines have long established baggage standards. In the premium segment, Qatar Airways is considered a "generous" airline when it allows business and first class passengers to carry 2 carry-on items, totaling 15kg, while economy class is only allowed to carry 7kg.

Emirates allows economy passengers to carry one 7kg piece, while business and first class passengers are allowed two items, usually a briefcase and a handbag, each weighing around 7kg. Cathay Pacific and ANA allow economy passengers to carry one 7kg piece, while business class passengers are allowed 10-15kg.

Singapore Airlines also maintains the 7kg rule for economy and premium economy passengers, and 14kg for business passengers, and requires luggage to be compact and not affect cabin space.

With Jetstar, economy class passengers are allowed a maximum of 7kg of hand luggage, while business class passengers are allowed 14kg. EasyJet allows each passenger to bring one small free hand luggage with a maximum weight of 15kg.

Notably, at the check-in area of Jetstar or EasyJet, the baggage checking and weighing process is automated, passengers can do it themselves at the self-weighing area without the need for staff assistance, helping to save time and increase initiative.

As for excess baggage fees, most airlines charge high prices with a big difference between pre-purchase and at the airport. Most airlines allow passengers to buy baggage online 6-12 hours before departure to save up to 50% on costs.

Regulations of Vietnamese airlines

According to current regulations, Vietnam Airlines business class passengers are allowed to carry 2 carry-on items (each item maximum 10kg) and 1 accessory, total weight not exceeding 18kg. Economy and premium economy class passengers are allowed to carry 1 10kg item and 1 small accessory, total 12kg.

However, from November 3, the airline will start charging excess carry-on baggage fees, applicable to items exceeding standard weight or size limits. This is the first time Vietnam Airlines has implemented this regulation, to ensure safety and fairness for passengers.

If the limit is exceeded, passengers must pay 30,000-40,000 VND/kg depending on the route. For international flights, the fee ranges from 8-15 USD/kg.

Meanwhile, Vietjet Air completely separates checked baggage from the ticket price. If passengers do not purchase checked baggage in advance and discover that their carry-on baggage is overweight at the airport, the fee at the counter can be up to 50,000-70,000 VND/kg, while buying online is only about 20,000-25,000 VND/kg.

Bamboo Airways applies similar regulations, allowing economy passengers to carry 7kg, business passengers 14kg. If exceeding the limit, passengers will be charged 50,000 VND/kg. The airline also encourages passengers to buy extra luggage in advance to save costs.

Vietravel Airlines applies similar regulations, allowing economy class passengers to save and flexibly bring 7kg, while premium economy class passengers can bring 12kg. If exceeding the standard, the fee ranges from 40,000-60,000 VND/kg depending on the route.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways also stipulates 7kg for economy class, 14kg for business class with additional small items such as laptops or handbags not exceeding 3kg.
