According to Vietnam News Agency, the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc and Mr. Tim Hughes, Senior Vice President of SpaceX, took place on April 10. Here, the decision to allow the pilot of Starlink service - a satellite Internet system developed by SpaceX was given.
Starlink is an ambitious project launched by SpaceX, with the goal of providing broadband Internet coverage across the globe using tens of thousands of satellites operating in low orbit, about 550 km above the ground. Not dependent on terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure, Starlink promises to bring stable connections everywhere, from urban areas to remote areas - places where traditional networks still have many limitations.
According to Decision No. 659/QD-TTg issued on March 23, SpaceX is allowed to pilot the Starlink service in Vietnam for a period of 5 years, ending before January 1, 2031. The decision also clearly stipulates that the number of subscribers must not exceed 600,000 and requires strict compliance with security and defense criteria.
Vietnam’s permission for SpaceX to deploy satellite internet services is a strategic move to expand internet access for all people, especially in geographically challenged areas, while attracting foreign investment in the high-tech sector. In the context of digital transformation being an irreversible trend, the presence of Starlink is expected to bring a strong boost to Vietnam’s connectivity infrastructure.
