Benjamin Bonzi caused a big surprise in the first round of the US Open when he defeated the 2021 US Open champion - Medvedev after 5 sets with the score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 0-6 and 6-4. However, the highlight was not only the result, but also the unprecedented incident at the US Open.
As the match was at a pivotal moment, Bonzi leading 2-0 and preparing to serve to end the match in the third set, a photographer suddenly entered the court and caused chaos.
The man was shouted at to leave by the referee, leading to a nearly seven-minute interruption of boos and disapproving reactions from the audience.
During the chaos, Medvedev expressed his displeasure. He walked up to the referee and said directly to the ESPN camera: "He wants to go home, guys, he doesn't want to be here. He's paid by the game, not by the hour."

After the incident, Bonzi served again but was clearly mentally affected. He immediately served a foul, giving Medvedev the chance to turn the situation around and win the tie-break, taking the match to a fourth set.
After the set, the photographer was asked to leave the court. Bonzi shared: "I have never experienced anything like this. It is difficult to play when you have to wait for 5 minutes and constantly be affected by noise. I tried to stay calm, but it was not easy."
In the fourth set, Bonzi had to ask for a temporary break to receive medical attention for an injury to his right leg. Medvedev took advantage of this opportunity to easily win and take the match to a deciding fifth set.
However, the drama continued, as Bonzi showed great character. He successfully saved 5 break points in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead, creating a huge psychological advantage. Bonzi then completely controlled the match and won the match 6-4.
