Correction of urinary malformation in 5 month old baby

Khanh Hoa: A 5-month-old baby with exposed bladder, urethral and pelvic malformations, and urinary leakage was successfully operated on by doctors.

After 4 days of health monitoring at Khanh Hoa General Hospital, the baby was consulted by doctors from the Center for Orthopedics and Burns and the Department of General Surgery with Dr. Phan Van Tiep - a pediatric orthopedic specialist in Ho Chi Minh City, and was prescribed surgery to correct bladder, urethral, ​​and pelvic malformations.

This is the first time the hospital has performed surgery for this deformity. The patient is only 5 months old, so the surgery is expected to be difficult due to the risk of damage to many organs, blood vessels and nerves.

The surgical team closed the bladder fistula, restored the bladder neck and reconstructed the urethra, then cut the bilateral pelvic bones and closed the pubic symphysis for the child. After 7 hours, the surgery was successful and the child was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit for monitoring.

The baby is currently recovering, has good mobility in both legs, and is still having a urethral catheter to monitor urine. The baby is expected to be discharged this week.

On November 8, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Ton, Head of the Department of General Surgery, Khanh Hoa General Hospital, said that this was a rare case due to simultaneous malformations of the urinary system and bones and joints. Fortunately, the doctors had carefully prepared the surgical plan, so the surgery was successful for the child.
