Subaru Forester is a strange spice in the SUV and crossover segment priced at 1 billion VND in Vietnam. Among the shiny competitors with trendy designs, Forester creates a separate customer group, who prefer practicality, pure functionality, and seek the driving experience and safety typical of Subaru.
How does Forester 2023 conquer Vietnamese customers?
First is the appearance. Instead of smooth lines to please the majority, the new Forester appears with a design that is solid, masculine, typical of an SUV. The overall body is square and sturdy, consisting of large pieces and not fussy about details.
In this upgraded version, Forester has a new headlight cluster and front bumper design. The radiator grille is the highlight with a large horizontal bar, the Subaru logo in the middle gives the front of the car a sportier and more modern look.
The SUV has a ground clearance of 220 mm and a wading ability of up to 500 mm, which is the largest in the segment. This is a factor that gives the Forester a distinct advantage, capable of operating on a variety of road conditions, even flooded roads after heavy rain or crossing streams during family outings.
The interior is designed in a similar language to the exterior, focusing on functionality and ease of use. Instead of many touch surfaces, the 2023 Forester's interior displays physical buttons, customizes a series of functions and changes operating modes - an interesting element when compared to competitors.
Other features of the 2023 Forester include dual-zone automatic climate control, separate air vents for the rear seats, an electronic handbrake with Auto Hold function. All seats are covered in leather, with 8-way power front seats. Double-layer soundproof glass, one-touch power windows and anti-jamming. Leather-wrapped steering wheel, with paddle shifters, and 17 function adjustment operations.
The trunk has a capacity of more than 500 liters, expandable to 2,000 liters when the second row of seats is folded flat, helping to increase storage volume on long family trips.
Entering the cabin, the seating position is where the Forester convinces those who love driving experiences. The square exterior design, high driver's seat, compact A-pillar and low rearview mirror give this model the most open view in the segment, even comparable to many luxury SUVs. The lack of blind spots makes it easier for the driver to observe and move more comfortably, especially on the streets of Saigon during rush hour. This advantage makes it easier for the Forester to approach the group of new drivers.
Subaru also enhances driver assistance capabilities with a series of equipment on the 4.0 generation EyeSight safety technology package, providing ADAS level 2 semi-autonomous driving technology.
Accordingly, the latest generation of EyeSight has been re-arranged by the Japanese company with a camera system, equipped with what is considered a "divine eye", supporting the driver to give the most accurate reactions. The scanning angle of the 2 cameras (stereo) is doubled, from 35 degrees to more than 60 degrees. The PCB Collision Avoidance Braking System helps limit the possibility of collision in more traffic situations, thanks to this stereo camera set.
The EyeSight 4.0 package has 3 new features: Lane Centering, Lane Departure Avoidance and Emergency Steering Assist. The first two features support the vehicle to move safely between lanes, the lane departure avoidance feature will affect the steering wheel, keeping the vehicle in the lane it is running in. Lane Centering is an additional feature, combined with Adaptive Cruise Control.
The Forester is the only vehicle in its class to feature Emergency Steering Assist, which is activated when Collision Avoidance Braking fails to stop the vehicle in time. The system automatically steers the vehicle away from an obstacle in the lane, operating at speeds below 80 km/h.
If we temporarily ignore a series of advanced safety technology equipment, what does Subaru Forester have left to convince Vietnamese customers?
On the 2023 Forester, the journey of more than 400 km from Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet City ( Binh Thuan ) becomes significantly more leisurely. That is the peace of mind for the driver coming from the solid chassis, flexible steering wheel, engine, gearbox and smooth acceleration drive system, which men often call "car quality". The 2023 Forester is developed on the SGP (Subaru Global Platform) global chassis system, which the company announced has 50% lower vibration, 40% more torsional rigidity and better soundproofing.
On the highway, the Forester does not impress with its powerful acceleration, lane changes or overtaking. The Japanese SUV focuses on providing a comfortable experience on long journeys, through the Lineartronic 7-speed virtual transmission. The suspension system reacts gently, significantly eliminating the phenomenon of tail swing when going over speed bumps, at a speed range of 100 km/h. Subaru's exclusive symmetrical SAWD 4-wheel drive system is capable of automatically distributing traction to each wheel.
The Forester’s interesting point compared to its competitors in the same segment is the X-Mode operating mode option, which changes a series of parameters from the engine, transmission and drive system, providing optimal control. The driver can choose between Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes depending on driving conditions from 40 km/h and above, then reactivate when the vehicle is running below 35 km/h. Previously, X-Mode was disabled at a speed of 40 km/h and had to be manually reactivated when necessary.
If users prefer a more individual and sporty style, Subaru offers a genuine GT Edition accessory kit in two versions. GT Lite for Forester iL, iL EyeSight and GT Premium for Forester iS EyeSight, designed exclusively for markets in Asia.
Subaru Forester 2023 distributed in the Vietnamese market has 3 versions, including 2.0 iL priced at 969 million VND, iL EyeSight priced at 1.099 billion VND and iS EyeSight priced at 1.199 billion VND.
