A 35-year-old man, residing in Hanoi , was recently admitted to the On-Demand Medical Examination and Treatment Center, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, with symptoms of numbness in the left half of his face, headache, dizziness, nausea, tinnitus and hearing loss.
According to Dr. Trinh Thuy Lien, an ENT specialist, the patient was ordered to have a brain MRI to rule out a stroke or a neuroma. The results showed no abnormalities, but a hearing test showed that he had moderate-severe sudden deafness in his left ear.
The cause was determined to be due to bathing at night with cold water, causing the micro-vessels in the inner ear to suddenly contract, reducing blood circulation. “This is a common risk factor but few people pay attention to it, especially in people with irregular living habits,” said Dr. Lien.
This man works at an auto repair shop and usually finishes work at 2-3am. He knows that taking a bath late at night is not good, but he has maintained this habit for many years. "I take a bath to wake up before going to bed, I didn't think it was so dangerous," he shared.
After 2 days of intensive treatment, the hearing in his left ear improved significantly and fully recovered on the 5th day of treatment. Other symptoms such as dizziness and tinnitus also disappeared. "Hearing the doctor say that I could be permanently deaf, I was really scared. Luckily, I got to the hospital in time," he emotionally recounted.
According to Dr. Lien, sudden deafness is a medical emergency that requires intervention within the “golden time” of the first 24 to 48 hours. Late treatment can lead to permanent hearing loss.
Doctors warn that staying up late, bathing at night, using headphones at high volume, drinking alcohol or being exposed to noise for a long time are all risk factors. When experiencing symptoms of hearing loss or tinnitus, patients should go to a medical facility as soon as possible.
