“Our air defenses confronted Israeli missiles and shot down some of them, causing only material damage,” a Syrian military source said.
For years, Israel has carried out strikes on what it describes as Iranian-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran's influence has grown since it began supporting President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that began in 2011.
Many Israeli military experts said the attacks were part of an escalation of a low-intensity conflict aimed at slowing Iran's growing entrenchment in Syria.
Iran-allied fighters, including Hezbollah, now control large areas in eastern, southern and northwestern Syria and in some suburbs around the capital.
