The prize, awarded by the Swedish Academy, is worth 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1 million).

Jon Fosse was born in 1959 in Haugesund, Norway. A serious accident at the age of seven greatly influenced the author's writing as an adult. He is one of the most performed playwrights in Europe. His oeuvre includes some 40 plays, as well as numerous novels, poems, essays, children's books, and translations. The Nobel Committee praised the author's style, which has come to be known as “Fossian minimalism.”

His first novel, Raudt, Svart (Red, Black), was published in 1983, although he considers the short story Han (He), published in a student newspaper in 1981, to be his literary debut. His breakthrough as a writer was the novel Naustet (The Boathouse) in 1989.

He then went on to write his first play in 1992: Nokon kjem til å kome (Someone Will Come). Although this was his first play, Og aldri skal vi skiljast (And Never Shall We Part) was the first play to be performed at the National Theatre in Bergen in 1994.

Fosse was the fourth Norwegian writer to receive the Nobel Prize. Bjornstjerne Bjornson was awarded the prize in 1903, Knut Hamsun in 1920 and Sigrid Undset in 1928.

Last year's Nobel Prize went to one of the most beloved authors - Annie Ernaux , for her largely autobiographical books examining memory and social inequality.

The winners of the Nobel Prizes in physics, medicine and chemistry were announced earlier this week. The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded tomorrow (October 6) and the Nobel Prize in economics will be awarded on October 9. All 2023 laureates are invited to attend the award ceremony on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
