No more inferiority complex
Receiving the breast cancer diagnosis during a general examination at Bach Mai Hospital, Ms. ABN was very shocked. Fortunately, with the coordination between the Oncology, Thoracic - Vascular Surgery and Plastic - Cosmetic Surgery departments, the treatment regimen for Ms. N was in the same surgery.
Doctors of the Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Bach Mai Hospital performed surgery on the patient.
The doctors removed the cancerous mass and the entire mammary gland, and at the same time reconstructed the missing breast. Therefore, after the surgery, Ms. N still retained her full figure.
"My daily activities have hardly changed. Not having one breast missing helps me feel more confident facing life after breast cancer treatment," Ms. N shared.
Similarly, Ms. NMP was also confused when she discovered breast cancer during a medical examination. Holding the diagnosis, Ms. P thought she had lost everything. However, with the encouragement of her family, friends and advice from doctors, Ms. P underwent surgery to remove the upper left breast to prevent the cancer from spreading.
After a difficult chemotherapy treatment, she overcame the terrible disease. 6 years later, she decided to have breast reconstruction to regain her confidence. After the surgery, Ms. P felt satisfied.
Ms. NTT also underwent breast reconstruction 1 year after removing the cancerous tumor. "My husband and family always encouraged me during the treatment process, but deep inside I still had many complexes because of my own defects. Recently, I had breast reconstruction from my own abdominal fat flap after giving birth, and I am really satisfied," Ms. T confided.
Kill two birds with one stone
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Thi Viet Dung, Head of the Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Bach Mai Hospital, for women, the breast is both a symbol of natural duty and a symbol of beauty and charm. Therefore, after having to have the breast removed, many breast cancer patients often feel inferior and self-conscious about themselves.
Combined treatment with new breast reconstruction helps many breast cancer patients face life with peace of mind and confidence (illustrative photo).
This hinders social communication and more or less affects the emotional life of the couple. Not to mention, having to use a bra with fake breasts causes a lot of inconvenience in daily life.
MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Van, Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Bach Mai Hospital, said that with the development of modern medicine and science , breast cancer patients can completely regain a balanced bust, avoiding self-consciousness, inferiority complex and inconvenience in life. The reconstructed part is even more beautiful than the original breast.
Depending on the physical condition, medical condition and condition of the patient, breast reconstruction after cancer can be performed. Immediate breast reconstruction with tumor removal (1 stage) or reconstruction after removal and stable breast cancer treatment (2 stages).
In any form, breast reconstruction does not affect the patient's cancer monitoring, recurrence or treatment.
"Moreover, breast reconstruction today mostly uses autologous skin and fat flaps, which are the patient's own skin and abdominal fat, so they have good compatibility, the breast is soft, natural, and highly aesthetic. Therefore, in the same surgery, the patient has both breast reconstruction and abdominal wall cosmetic surgery, excess fat and skin are removed, and the body shape is more balanced and fresh," Dr. Van emphasized.
Not all patients can have reconstruction.
According to Dr. Nguyen Do Thuy Giang, Department of Breast Surgery, Tam Anh General Hospital, breast reconstruction surgery is a major surgery, a continuation of treatment and requires high technique. Therefore, not all breast cancer patients can undergo breast reconstruction. This method is only performed on patients who have had total mastectomy and are in good health.
Breast reconstruction can help restore the shape of the breast, eliminate the feeling of illness and physical defects after breast cancer surgery, but does not increase the rate of recurrence or prolong the time of breast cancer treatment support. Therefore, if you have enough health and economic conditions, you can consider breast reconstruction to improve your quality of life.
