The former Ipswich Town star's first goal came in a 3-0 win over ES Tunis, helping Chelsea progress to the knockout stages of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™.
Chelsea fans were delighted with Delap's performance. One account wrote: "A promising number 9". Another said: "He's strong and has incredible physicality".
Reaching the last 16 earned Chelsea £33.8m in bonuses, enough to cover the entire transfer fee for Delap, who joined Stamford Bridge for £30m earlier this month.
The surplus (about 3.8 million pounds) even helps Chelsea pay part of Delap's salary. The English striker has an income of about 100,000 pounds/week (equivalent to 5.2 million pounds per year).
Delap impresses with his strong and aggressive playing style, like a traditional striker. He shared: "I've always enjoyed such battles since I was a child. I really love the competition and fighting spirit of the team."
Chelsea didn't have to work too hard in the sweltering American heat to earn their first £25m, thanks to their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™. However, the Blues failed to live up to their expectations in their opening game, losing 3-1 to Flamengo.
However, wins over LAFC and Tunis brought Chelsea an extra £1.5m each, plus £5.8m for reaching the knockout stages.
In the next round, coach Enzo Maresca and his team will face Benfica. The team has the opportunity to pocket more bonus money from FIFA if they reach the quarter-finals.
