Mr. Hegseth pledged to advance President Trump's mission of achieving peace through strength in three ways: Restoring Warrior Morale; Rebuilding Military; Reestablishing Deterrence.
“All of these measures will be implemented with a focus on operational capability, meritocracy, accountability, standards, and readiness,” the new US Defense Secretary said in a statement.
Pete Hegseth, an Army National Guard veteran and former Fox News host, is now secretary of defense after narrowly winning confirmation from the Senate on the evening of January 24. Vice President J.D. Vance cast the deciding vote after three Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—objected to President Donald Trump’s troubled pick to lead the world’s most well-funded military.
Hegseth's confirmation was the closest in history, with the previous four nominees for defense secretary all receiving 90 votes or more — a stark contrast to Hegseth's contentious path to the role.
Hegseth was confirmed by the Senate with the deciding vote of Vice President Vance. This is only the second time in US history that a vice president has used such a vote, after former Vice President Mike Pence cast the deciding vote to confirmEducation Secretary Betsy DeVos in 2017.
