On November 6, the US Congressional Budget Office (CBO) announced that it had detected a cyber security incident and quickly deployed measures to prevent intrusion into the system of this agency that specializes in providing financial research data to the US Congress.
In a statement, the CBO said it had increased oversight and added new security controls after discovering the incident.
Currently, the service of the National Assembly is still operating normally and the investigation is underway. The agency said it "regularly faces cyber threats and must always closely monitor and handle them."
Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported that foreign hackers are suspected of being behind the attack and internal chat logs may be among the compromised data.
Earlier this week, media reports said Senate Counsel officials also warned multiple congressional offices of a “cyber incident” that may have exposed email communications between the CBO and the Senate.
The compromised data could be used by hackers to create phishing emails that look like official letters from the CBO. Therefore, people are advised to carefully check the authenticity of emails, messages and calls coming from the CBO.
Established in 1974, CBO is a non-partisan agency that analyzes the budget and economy for the US Congress, providing independent assessments from the White House Budget Office and other executive agencies./.
