Strengthening forest fire prevention and control in hot season

Forces in Thach Thanh district organized forest fire prevention and fighting drills.

Mr. Vu Van Dong, a forest owner in Nhan Ly village, Ha Binh commune (Ha Trung), said: "My family has been taking care of and protecting 8 hectares of protective pine forest since 2005. Since being assigned the forest land, the family has been regularly informed by forest rangers and local authorities on how to care for and protect the forest, especially forest fire prevention in the dry and hot season. The family also spent 6 million VND to invest in building firebreaks. In particular, when clearing the undergrowth, we often gather it into small piles, burn it early in the morning or late in the afternoon and wait until it is finished before returning... Thanks to that, the entire forest area of the family has grown green and lush, and there have been no forest fires."

Ha Binh commune currently has 302.23 hectares of forest, of which 234 hectares are production forests and 68.23 hectares are protective forests, mainly pine forests. To improve the effectiveness of management and protection, PCCCR, in addition to promoting propaganda to raise people's awareness in forest care and protection, the locality also coordinates with the Thach Thanh Protective Forest Management Board and local forest rangers to regularly inspect and remind people not to illegally exploit timber. At the same time, instruct people to regularly clean the forest, process the undergrowth into small piles, burn it during safe hours and make a runway to avoid spreading to neighboring areas. When burning the undergrowth, wait until the fire is completely gone and a forest ranger or village chief comes to inspect, and only return when it is safe. Thanks to that, the local forest area has not been deforested or burned for many years.

It is known that Ha Trung district currently has 5,614 hectares of forest, of which 2,159.92 hectares are at high risk of fire, mainly pine, acacia, eucalyptus forests, concentrated in 10 communes such as Ha Dong, Ha Linh, Ha Tan, Ha Binh, Yen Son... Mr. Ngo Xuan Bien, Deputy Head of Ha Trung Forest Protection Department, said: "In addition to advising the District People's Committee to issue many documents directing communes with forests to strengthen protection and PCCCR work, the department also coordinates with functional units and local authorities to promote propaganda on forest protection and PCCCR work on the radio system; integrate documents related to protection and PCCCR work in meetings. At the same time, coordinate with localities and forest owners to organize patrols and strictly manage people entering and leaving the forest, not to bring fire, explosives, and flammable substances into the forest".

At this time, the PCCCR work with the motto "4 on-site" is also thoroughly grasped and seriously implemented by functional forces, localities and forest owners in Thach Thanh district. Mr. Nguyen Duc Hiep, Head of Thach Thanh Forest Protection Department, said: "Of the 24,888.11 hectares of forest in Thach Thanh district, there are 12,804.9 hectares of planted forest, the rest is natural forest. In order to prevent forest fires in the district, especially the 1,062.19 hectares of pine forest in the communes of Thanh Long, Ngoc Trao and Thach Cam, in addition to promoting propaganda to raise awareness and fire prevention and control skills for people, the department also coordinates with local authorities with forests to mobilize households to regularly clear vegetation, repair and renew firebreaks combined with forest protection patrol roads. At the same time, organize forest fire fighting drills for groups and teams as well as strictly manage fire sources brought into the forest illegally. In addition, the department also strengthens patrols and guards to promptly detect and handle forest fires. Up to this point, there have been no forest fires in the district."

Mr. Trinh Dang Tinh, Deputy Head of the Forest Protection and Violation Handling Department, Thanh Hoa Provincial Forest Protection Department, said: "The whole province has 48,050 hectares of forest at high risk of fire. To proactively prevent forest fires, from the beginning of the year, the department has advised all levels to review, prepare means and forces to participate in rescue, develop plans, especially combat plans when forest fires occur. Up to this point, Party committees, authorities and forest owners have focused resources, proactively organized and implemented forest fire prevention and control work synchronously and effectively."
