Focus on solving urgent social issues for women and children in ethnic minorities and mountainous areas

(PLVN) - This goal has been continued by the Vietnam Women's Union in phase 2 (from 2026-2030) of the implementation of the Project "Achieving gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" (Project 8) in the National Target Program on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Accordingly, at the Consultation Workshop to contribute ideas to complete the proposed content and solutions of Project 8 organized by the Vietnam Women's Union on May 31, 2025, Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong - Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union said that Project 8 is one of 10 component projects under the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas (EMMA) for the period 2021-2025, assigned to the Vietnam Women's Union to preside over the implementation with the goal of raising awareness, changing gender stereotypes, caring for material and spiritual life, protecting and caring for women and children, and achieving gender equality in EMMA and MMA areas.

After 5 years, Project 8 has basically completed 4 key contents. Specifically, promoting and mobilizing changes in "thinking and doing" to help eliminate gender prejudices and stereotypes, harmful cultural practices and some urgent social issues for women and children. Building and replicating models of changing "thinking and doing" to enhance women's economic power; promoting gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children.

Ensuring the voice and substantive participation of women and children in socio-economic development activities of the community; monitoring and criticism; supporting women to participate in leadership in the political system. Equipping knowledge and skills to implement gender equality for officials in the political system, village elders, village chiefs and prestigious people in the community).

As a result, 8/9 core targets of Project 8 have been achieved and exceeded the phase plan, of which 4/9 targets exceeded the plan, including: Community communication team, Trusted address, "Leader of change" club, Capacity for female ethnic minority cadres has been improved.

Also according to the Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union, implementing the general goal of "Achieving gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" in the 2021-2030 period in accordance with the spirit of Resolution 88/2019/QH14 dated November 18, 2019 of the 14th National Assembly approving the Project on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the 2021-2030 period, the Vietnam Women's Union continues to propose contents and solutions to implement the goal of gender equality and focus on effectively solving a number of urgent social issues for women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the new context.

Expected with 4 specific policy groups: Propaganda, mobilization to change "thinking, ways of doing" to promote gender equality in ethnic minority areas; Support to enhance the economic power of women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas; Support to solve some urgent social issues for women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas; Promote the leadership role, the substantive participation of women and children in socio-economic development activities; improve gender mainstreaming capacity for officials in the political system...

At the workshop, delegates focused on clarifying the proposed contents of Project 8 for the 2026-2030 period and suggesting new issues that need attention; recommending specific contents and solutions to integrate gender into projects/contents of the Program for the 2026-2030 period such as family education, parenting education; supporting access to and use of clean water and sanitation; supporting livelihoods and capacity building for women with disabilities in ethnic minority and mountainous areas....

According to Dr. Dang Thai Hung - policy consultant, "Promoting gender equality must be the task of ministries, branches and localities, not the sole task of the Vietnam Women's Union. Implementing gender equality requires mechanisms, budgets, and specific guidelines. It is necessary to promote positive actions, even creating short-term discrimination to achieve the goal of gender equality".

Previously, on May 27, 2025, in Hue City, the Vietnam Women's Union organized a consultation workshop with 30 provinces and cities in the Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions to collect diverse opinions from many perspectives and regions nationwide.
