At least 50 people were killed and many others injured when the Coromandel Express train collided head-on with a freight train in Balasore city in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, the Hindustan Times reported on June 2.
The train accident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. (local time) near Bahanaga Bazar station when the express train was en route from Shalimar station (West Bengal state) to Chennai Central station (Tamil Nadu state).
According to India Today , four coaches of the express train derailed after colliding with a freight train. 179 injured passengers were taken to various medical centers in the area, many of them in critical condition. ANI reported that the number of injured people was 132.
Rescue teams have been rushed to the area. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed more officials and fire brigades to the spot to rescue the victims.
Odisha authorities have also arranged generators and lights at the scene to aid rescue efforts. Odisha official Pradeep Jena initially said about 50 ambulances had reached the scene of the accident, but the number of injured people exceeded their capacity and more buses were called in to help.
Images from the scene show the locomotive of the Coromandel Express running over the freight train after the collision. According to initial information, both trains were traveling on the same track. Authorities are investigating.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the state government is coordinating with Odisha and South Eastern Railways to assist in the rescue operation. She added that the state government is sending a five-six-member team to assist the Odisha government.
