Solar power development was once thought to affect agricultural activities. However, a solar power company in the US has proven the opposite. Solar power and agricultural activities can benefit each other.
Enel North America, a renewable energy company in the US, has just teamed up with a partner to release 6,000 sheep to control vegetation at 8 solar power plants in the Texas area.
Texas Solar Sheep, a company that provides vegetation management services at solar power plants, will graze 6,000 sheep on nearly 4,100 hectares of solar farms invested by Enel North America. This is the largest solar power generation-livestock cooperation agreement in the United States.
According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), grazing livestock on solar farms improves soil quality, uses water more efficiently, and reduces maintenance and operating costs for photovoltaic systems. This increases the sustainable value of solar power generation and fosters community partnerships.
Sheep grazing under the solar panels help clean these areas and release organic matter that improves the soil. According to surveys, grazing on Enel's solar farms improves soil quality. In some areas, soil organic matter increased by more than 200%. Sheep farming also creates a richer flora thanks to the seeds and pollination that stick to the sheep's wool. It also provides a source of income for local shepherds.
Marcus Krembs, director of external relations and sustainability at Enel North America, said solar power development and agricultural activities can go hand in hand. This commitment not only helps protect the environment, but also supports local economies , creating new jobs and ecosystem services.
