Lam Dong: Building a sustainable coffee brand from the value chain.

DNVN - In order to develop high-quality coffee brands, enhance the value of agricultural products, and expand export markets, Lam Dong province is promoting a production linkage model along the value chain, combining the application of high technology, traceability, and achieving international certification standards.

According to the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment, by the end of 2025, the province will have nearly 323,241.5 hectares of coffee, with an estimated production of over 1,001,710 tons, accounting for approximately 50.5% of the total coffee production nationwide.

Notably, there are 6 high-tech coffee growing areas covering nearly 2,268.5 hectares, attracting more than 1,400 farming households, including the communes of Bao Thuan, Bao Lam 2, Hoa Bac, Nam Nung, Duc An, and Thuan An.

According to Lam Dong Newspaper, the province currently has 33 coffee growing area codes covering more than 435 hectares, with a production of approximately 3,335 tons. Additionally, over 118,300 hectares of coffee have received international certifications such as 4C, Rainforest Alliance, and UTZ, along with 346 hectares achieving VietGAP certification and 275 hectares achieving organic certification.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Linh, Deputy Head of the Lam Dong Provincial Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development of Agricultural Products, said: “Farmers who comply with certified production standards not only help ensure clear traceability and enhance product value, but also qualify to participate in the European Union's Deforestation-Free Coffee Supply Chain (EUDR). Businesses that are linked to purchasing EUDR-certified coffee currently sign contracts at prices 10-15% higher than the market price, thereby helping growers increase their income sustainably.”

Currently, Lam Dong province has 67 linkage chains between farmers, cooperatives, and businesses, with 29,442 households participating on an area of 55,491 hectares, producing 185,636 tons per year, equivalent to 18.5% of the province's total coffee production. In the 2024-2025 crop year, Lam Dong's coffee exports to demanding markets such as Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Germany reached 158,253 tons, with a value of approximately 478.86 million USD.

Besides the brand "Da Lat - A miraculous essence from fertile land," the province has 15 coffee brands protected by intellectual property rights, such as Godere, Dak Tin, Hai Nhung, Hoang Gia Phu, Viet Nong, Enjoy Coffee, Ca Phe Day..., along with 6 recognized product brands, notably Dak Mil Coffee, Bazan Coffee, Lang Biang Arabica Coffee, and Cau Dat Arabica Coffee.

In addition, the province is implementing 11 projects to expand the coffee production-consumption chain with a total budget of over 8.2 billion VND, contributing to stabilizing output, ensuring consistent quality, and creating a sustainable source of raw materials for deep processing businesses. In reality, by participating in high-quality coffee supply chains, farmers have gradually shifted their mindset from quantity to quality and value, focusing on clean production processes, selective harvesting, wet processing, and proper drying, meeting both domestic and international standards.

To further develop the Lam Dong coffee brand in the future, the Department of Agriculture and Environment aims to encourage farmers to participate in a closed-loop supply chain from production to consumption, while supporting businesses to invest in deep processing such as roasting, instant coffee, and packaged specialty coffee, in order to increase the proportion of processed product exports instead of just exporting raw coffee beans.

Enhancing competitiveness and expanding international markets will help Lam Dong coffee assert its position on the world coffee map, becoming a symbol of quality, sustainability, and high added value.
