(NLDO)- In the current context, Hai Phong's shipbuilding industry is facing many enormous challenges.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City, said that as one of the main centers of Vietnam's shipbuilding industry, Hai Phong has 34 shipyards, with a total workforce of more than 21,000 people.

Hai Phong shipbuilding industry has become a center for manufacturing and exporting ships to countries and territories such as: England, Netherlands, Korea, Germany, Norway, Japan, Taiwan (China)...

The city also has many large shipbuilding enterprises such as Pha Rung Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company, Bach Dang Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company, Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company, Song Cam Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company, Damen-Song Cam Shipbuilding Company Limited, Thai Binh Duong Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company, etc.

"In the current context, Hai Phong's shipbuilding industry is facing many difficulties and challenges such as the lack of high-quality human resources. Currently, market requirements and strict regulations of international conventions require new generations of ships to ensure high safety, diversity in types, sizes, designs... In particular, in processing and production, it must be green and protect the environment. Therefore, finding human resources that meet production requirements is a big challenge.

On the other hand, because they are part of the Vinashin/SBIC system, Hai Phong shipbuilding enterprises have to face systemic difficulties and crises and the Government must intervene," shared the Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City.

Increasingly fierce competition in the international market, pressure for technological innovation, along with internal financial and resource difficulties, place the shipbuilding industry before urgent requirements for transformation.

Mr. Joris van Tienen, General Director of Damen-Song Cam Shipbuilding Company, said: "Hai Phong City has a lot of potential in developing the shipbuilding industry. However, we cannot produce raw materials ourselves, so our company still has to import raw materials from China to build Vietnamese ships. Along with that, Hai Phong City's river ports are still fragmented and not synchronized."

The General Director of Damen-Song Cam Shipbuilding Company hopes that in the coming time, authorities at all levels in Vietnam in general and Hai Phong City in particular will soon overcome the above situation to meet the needs of shipbuilding enterprises in the city.

According to the representative of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Hai Phong City, Hai Phong City has large enterprises in the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry, experienced and highly skilled human resources, and available facilities and infrastructure to ensure sufficient capacity to build modern ships in the world. However, the development of the ship repair and construction industry is facing many difficulties and challenges. Therefore, Hai Phong City needs to study the planning of a concentrated shipbuilding industrial area to take advantage of the connection between rivers and seas, overcoming the current situation of scattered, fragmented, and patchwork shipbuilding enterprises. Hai Phong City should be a pioneer in organizing international maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding events to attract foreign investors in the shipbuilding sector. At the same time, encourage the establishment of an association of shipbuilding enterprises to share information, connect, and support shipbuilding enterprises to overcome difficulties, customers, etc.

According to Mr. Le Anh Quan, Permanent Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee, Hai Phong has long been associated with the shipbuilding industry, an industry with a long history. Talking about Hai Phong means talking about shipbuilding and seaports, an industry that contributes significantly to the economic development of the city as well as the whole country. The restoration and redevelopment of the shipbuilding industry associated with green development will contribute to promoting and creating strong growth momentum, continuing to affirm its role as one of the key industries of the Port City and the country, creating a strategic position for Hai Phong when participating in economic corridors, effectively implementing the Government's investment so that Hai Phong can develop into a logistics service center of the country and the region.
