The command bunker of General De Castries, also known as the Northwest Operational Corps Headquarters, is located in Thanh Truong ward, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province. Seventy years later, the traces of the French army and General De Castries remain intact in what the French considered an impregnable fortress in Indochina.
During the Dien Bien Phu campaign, the De Castries bunker served as the command center of the Dien Bien Phu fortified complex. The De Castries Tunnel is one of the 23 special historical monuments of the nation. The bunker was built with sturdy materials, capable of withstanding many of the most modern weapons of the time. The structure and layout remain completely unchanged. The pit is 2 meters deep, 8 meters wide, and 20 meters long, with 4 compartments. Around the pit and on the partitions are rows of barrels filled with sand. The tunnel roof was covered with arched steel plates, topped with layers of sandbags and large wooden beams. The tunnel had two entrances connecting to adjacent tunnels. The bunker served as a workspace and resting place for General De Castries and the command staff of the Dien Bien Phu fortified complex.
