Consulting on building Hon Yen coral reef conservation project

On May 21, in Tuy Hoa City, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in collaboration with the Provincial Women's Union organized a consultation conference to develop the project "Promoting coral reef conservation management associated with community tourism and promoting cultural values ​​of coastal villages".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, National Coordinator of Small-Scale Projects of the United Nations Global Environment Facility; Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thai, President of the Provincial Women's Union and Dr. Nguyen Khac Toan, Principal of the Training School of the Vietnam Farmers' Union (representing the expert group) co-chaired the conference. Attending the conference were representatives of Phu Yen University, Central University of Construction, relevant departments, branches and localities.

The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility - Small Grants Program (GEF/SGP) of UNDP in Vietnam, with a total budget of 200,000 USD, implemented in 15 months (9/2025-12/2026). The Provincial Women's Union is the unit receiving the funding and directly implementing the project according to GEF principles.

The project aims to sustainably conserve the coral reef ecosystem at Hon Yen (An Hoa Hai commune, Tuy An district) in combination with developing community tourism and preserving the cultural values ​​of the coastal village. The main activities of the project include: Organizing communication to raise public awareness, promoting sustainable management of aquatic resources, developing new livelihood models associated with community tourism, and conserving coral reefs using technical measures such as zoning, monitoring, installing signs and buoys to limit the area.

In addition, the project also focuses on applying information technology in monitoring conservation activities, while strengthening the role of self-governing organizations and promoting traditional cultural values ​​of fishing villages...

At the conference, delegates focused on exchanging and discussing issues that need to be implemented and completed for the project to ensure it is suitable for the local situation.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thai said that from now until May 24, UNDP will coordinate with the Provincial Women's Union and relevant departments and branches to conduct field surveys to collect data and field information to design and implement the project effectively.
