For nearly 30 years, Nguyen Trong Huu has been blind due to the consequences of acute cataracts in his eyes since he was 6 months old. As the only son in the family, Huu cannot help but feel sorry for himself when he cannot help his parents with household chores and take care of his relatives when they are sick. Huu shared: “My parents only have me as a son, and I am like this. Sometimes I wonder how I will be able to take care of my parents in the future, how I will support my family, and sometimes I feel very desperate. Like last week, my father came home from gardening and was shocked by a foot injury that became very infected and had to be hospitalized for surgery. I felt so helpless, I also wanted to go to the hospital to take care of my father but couldn't. If I wasn't blind, I wouldn't be such a burden on my family."

Looking back on his life, Mr. Huu feels even more heartbroken when the future of his three children is still full of hardship. In 2020, his marriage broke down, and Mr. Huu raised two sons, Gia Phuc, 8 years old, and Phuc Thinh, 4 years old, alone. Mr. Huu has a job as a massage therapist, but in his remote hometown, there is no place to work, so Mr. Huu reluctantly left his children in his hometown for his parents to take care of and went to Soc Trang ward to find a way to make a living. Here, Mr. Huu worked as a masseuse at the Association for the Blind. Thanks to his ability to learn quickly and persevere in improving his skills, Mr. Huu was given the opportunity to work by the association's leadership and was wholeheartedly trusted by customers. For Mr. Huu, the massage and acupressure job is not only a way to make a living, but also a source of life for him to be able to confidently raise his children and support his parents: "Doing this job can be very tiring sometimes, helping customers get rid of their pain means I get hurt. Just thinking about how if I try one day, my children can study one more day, have enough food to eat one more day, and my parents can have a little less trouble, I try my best."

Although he is devoted to his work, deep in the heart of a dutiful son and a father who loves his children very much, is the dream of returning to his family after many days away from home. Mr. Huu confided: “No father wants to live far away from his children, I also want to be close to take care of and educate my children. But because of my circumstances, I have to reluctantly go to work far away from my children. But if my dream were to come true, I would still wish to have the capital to return to my hometown to open a small massage and acupressure shop to work every day and be by my parents’ side to take care of them and educate my children. The most important thing is to be close to my children.”

Only when father and son are close together can happiness be complete. Phuc Thinh and Gia Phuc are the great motivation for this blind father to be stronger on the difficult path of making a living. Phuc Thinh whispered: "Dad cannot see the road and has to work hard, I love him so much. My second brother and I want dad to come back and live with us, so that dad can protect us."
