This morning (May 31), the Women's Union of Da Nang City coordinated with the People's Committee of Thanh Khe District to organize the Launching Ceremony in response to "Month of Action for the Environment and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2025", in response to World Environment Day (June 5) with the theme "Fighting Plastic Pollution".
At the launching ceremony, many activities took place such as "Exchanging trash for gifts", purchasing recyclable trash and non-biodegradable plastic bags, environmental painting contest and giving protective equipment to women who collect scrap metal.
Through these activities, it contributes to raising people's awareness of biodiversity conservation, climate change response, natural disaster prevention and environmental protection. Thereby, mobilizing the proactive and active participation of all levels, sectors, unions, organizations, individuals and communities; promoting the core role of women's union members; conserving biodiversity; implementing models of solid waste classification at source, combating plastic waste, protecting the marine environment... contributing to the effective implementation of the Project "Building Da Nang - Environmental City" by 2025.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, Vice President of the Women's Union of Da Nang City, said: In Da Nang, there are about 1,000-1,800 women working in the scrap metal trade. On average, each person can collect from 200kg to 500kg of recyclable waste per month, contributing to reducing pressure on the official waste collection system. However, most of them work in conditions lacking protective equipment, with unstable incomes and are not recognized in terms of law or social policy.
The Women's Union of Da Nang City has supported the establishment of 2 Women's Scrap Collector Clubs with 55 members in Thanh Khe and Ngu Hanh Son districts; presented health insurance cards to 30 people and donated 10 means of livelihood such as carts and bicycles to help women in difficult circumstances. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, Vice President of the Women's Union of Da Nang City, added:
“This is one of the activities that we think will create awareness among people and the community to do a good job of protecting the environment, especially the marine environment. Through this activity, we hope that people will raise their awareness and join hands to clean up the marine environment,” said Ms. Huyen.
