Emotional day to bring you back to your comrades

Although there is not enough evidence to accurately identify the remains of the two martyrs discovered at Ro Tuong Pass (in Phu Huu village, Ninh Ich commune, Ninh Hoa town), the results of the search and recovery of the remains for burial at the martyrs' cemetery are a great effort of the agencies, departments, branches and localities; and a great spiritual encouragement for the martyrs' relatives. After more than half a century, they have returned to the side of their comrades who sacrificed themselves for the Fatherland!

On the morning of May 31, at Ninh Hoa - Van Ninh Martyrs' Cemetery, in a solemn and emotional atmosphere, the Town Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ninh Hoa Town held a memorial service and buried the remains of two martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the resistance war against the US. The ceremony was not only a deep gesture of gratitude from the Party Committee, government and people of the town to the outstanding sons who fell for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, but also the result of a journey full of effort, responsibility and affection in the work of searching for and collecting the remains of martyrs.

Before the ceremony took place, few people knew that behind the process of bringing the remains of the heroes back to the martyrs' cemetery for burial was a whole process of hard work and silence by the officers and soldiers of the Ninh Hoa Town Military Command and the authorities. From limited sources of information, the authorities verified and reviewed each clue to trace the remains of the martyrs' graves that had been buried for more than half a century. As a result, through the process of tirelessly implementing many synchronous verification measures, comparing information provided by witnesses and relatives of the martyrs' families and through field surveys during the period from the end of 2024 to May 2025, the Ninh Hoa Town Military Command identified two earthen graves in the Ro Tuong Pass area - where many fierce battles took place in the final days of the resistance war against the US. Through comparing information from the records of the units and the list of martyrs who were initially buried in the town in particular and the province in general, the authorities of Ninh Hoa town have identified this as the initial burial place of two martyrs: Nguyen Khac Dau (born in 1953, from Van Thien commune, Nong Cong district, Thanh Hoa province) and Kha Van Phong (born in 1953, from Mac village, Thach Giam commune, Tuong Duong district, Nghe An province). Both of them died due to a tunnel collapse on April 5, 1975, the time close to the day of the complete liberation of the South.

On that basis, on May 29, Steering Committee 24 (Steering Committee for implementing regimes and policies for citizens on the frontline participating in the resistance war against France, against the US, the war to protect the Fatherland and performing international duties) of Ninh Hoa town organized the exhumation of the remains of 2 martyrs. After completing the exhumation, the forces brought the remains to the Memorial House at Ninh Hoa - Van Ninh Martyrs Cemetery to continue coordinating with the authorities to carry out related processes and procedures and organize the memorial and burial ceremony.

At the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Khac Nghia (nephew of martyr Nguyen Khac Dau) emotionally shared: “This result is the great effort of the functional agencies of Ninh Hoa town in particular and Khanh Hoa province in general, especially the military agencies at all levels. I and 7 family members from the North are very moved by the efforts and responsibility of the local functional agencies in the search for martyrs' remains, as well as the dedication and thoughtfulness for the relatives of the martyrs' families in the past days. My family also looks forward to the earliest day, when the DNA test results are available to identify the remains of the 2 martyrs, we will return here, asking for permission to bring my uncle back to be buried at the martyrs' cemetery in his hometown”.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Tran - Political Commissar of the Ninh Hoa Town Military Command, because the identity of each martyr's remains has not yet been determined, after the exhumation, the unit has coordinated with the Town's Internal Affairs Department to collect remains and biological samples from relatives of the families to send to higher authorities for DNA testing. When the results are available, the unit will organize the relocation of the martyrs' remains to their hometown martyrs' cemetery for burial according to the wishes of the families.
