With two typical examples Huynh Van Hai and Luu Minh Chau, high-tech shrimp farming in Kien Giang is showing a sustainable development direction, both environmentally friendly and providing high income, creating jobs for local workers.

In the sunny and windy border area of Giang Thanh, few people expected that in the middle of the wild fields of years ago, there has now sprung up a magnificent shrimp farming facility of Mr. Huynh Van Hai, 51 years old, residing in Tra Pho hamlet, Phu My commune. Mr. Hai started his relationship with shrimp in 2011. From using a water pump, he has now invested in a 3-phase electrical system for high-tech shrimp farming at a cost of nearly 1.4 billion VND, serving an entire 8-hectare farm, with 30 ponds, each pond up to 1,200m².

Mr. Luu Minh Chau's high-tech shrimp farm is equipped with an oxygen fan system and a siphon system at the bottom of the pond to ensure water quality for shrimp growth.

The special feature of Mr. Hai's model is the pond with a tarpaulin bottom, the settling pond takes up 30% of the area, a smart way to treat water taken directly from the canal. Just looking at his shrimp farming process, everyone has to nod because it is methodical, scientific , and professional. He hires 3 main workers, each in charge of the technique for 4 ponds. The work is divided into clear shifts, the shrimp feeding is also supported by a machine, saving both effort and being precise for each meal.

He chooses shrimp seeds from reputable brands such as Nam My, Duong Hung, and Viet Uc. On average, Mr. Hai sells about 80 tons of shrimp each year. Shrimps sized 30 pieces/kg are favored by Cambodian traders, while larger ones are sold directly to Hanoi using specialized vehicles with oxygen. Thanks to buying medicine and food from clear sources at reasonable prices, Mr. Hai earns a profit of more than 1 billion VND each year.

“I find shrimp farming now very easy, there is 3-phase electricity, concrete roads, vehicles running to the pond, workers have a ready-made schedule, just do it. We just need to supervise and calculate reasonable output and it will be fine,” said Mr. Hai. Not only good at shrimp farming, Mr. Hai is also a delegate of the district People's Council, a member of the Executive Committee of the Giang Thanh District Farmers' Association, and has been awarded the title of good farmer and businessman at the Central level for many consecutive years. He also has a long-term direction when he lets his son study aquaculture, do an internship to gain experience so that he can later succeed his father, maintaining the "Tra Pho clean shrimp brand".

Engineer Hoang Van Tam checks the size of farmed shrimp at Mr. Luu Minh Chau's high-tech shrimp farm.

Not to be outdone, in Ha Tien City, Mr. Luu Minh Chau, 57 years old, is also making a miracle in the middle of the scorching hot season. While many people are concerned that the hot weather makes shrimp susceptible to heat shock, Mr. Chau firmly asserts: "Shrimp are healthier on hot days than on rainy days". Having been farming with high technology for about 7 years, Mr. Chau currently owns 16 ponds with an area of 1,400-2,000m², all of which are lined with tarpaulin, equipped with a bottom siphon system and especially an automatic chlorine drop system, a golden secret to help treat clean water, prevent pathogens, and maintain a stable farming environment. With a total area of 12 hectares divided into 3 areas, he can closely control each batch of farming, minimizing the spread of disease.

On average, Mr. Chau raises 3 crops a year, each pond can produce about 6 tons of shrimp. From the beginning of 2025 until now, shrimp of size 30 shrimp/kg have sometimes reached nearly 200,000 VND/kg, much higher than the same period last year. Thanks to methodical farming and good technical control, he always has a stable output. Small shrimp are exported to Cambodia, large shrimp are transported to the North, a part is consumed domestically in a "thinning" manner, helping the shrimp in the pond grow quickly, and harvesting is effective in spreading out the crops. Sharing the secret, Mr. Chau said simply but firmly: "After 20-30 days, I harvest the first batch, then continue to set up shrimp traps. It both reduces pond density and reduces risks. The important thing is to keep the pond environment good, the fry healthy, and let the shrimp grow on their own."
