At the recent education forum Outstanding Education - Cherishing Identity , singer Thanh Bui attracted much attention when sharing his views on preserving Vietnamese identity in the international educational environment.

As the founder of a school system that trains according to international standards, Thanh Bui believes that global integration is necessary but we cannot lose our roots.

"In order for the young generation to not only know, but also understand about identity, international schools must teach them about Vietnamese traditions, culture and history," he said.

According to the male singer, his students must speak English fluently but also be fluent in Vietnamese. In the curriculum, they learn about traditional Tet, the meaning of Chung cake, Mid-Autumn Festival, play folk games, learn how to be grateful, filial, etc.

"I am concerned about a generation of Vietnamese who are only good at saying "hello" but don't know how to "greet". Vietnamese cannot become a foreign language for Vietnamese people themselves," he emphasized.

Sharing about how to teach children at home, Thanh Bui said that his twin children speak 3 languages at the same time: Vietnamese with their grandmother, Chinese with their grandmother, and English in the learning environment.

"Using multiple languages helps children be flexible and express themselves appropriately in each context," he said.

However, for Thanh Bui, Vietnamese still has a special sacred meaning. "If we are debating a social issue, English will help clarify the issue. But when there is disagreement, love needs to be aroused, and reconciliation needs to be done, it must be in Vietnamese. Only later did I understand why Vietnamese is the mother tongue. It is the language of the home.

One memory I will never forget is the time my son greeted his grandmother with "hello". At that time, she reminded me: "This must not happen again, because we are Vietnamese". That moment made me wake up", he said.

Thanh Bui recalls that in the first days of returning to Vietnam, he could not pronounce Vietnamese clearly. Listening to his old recordings, he admitted that he felt "uncomfortable" because he could not hear his own voice.

"The audience was very sympathetic. That's also part of the reason I turned to education to relearn and do what I believe in," the male singer shared.
