According to the resolution, the new An Giang province has an area of 9,888.91 km² and a population of 4,952,238 people. After the reorganization, An Giang province has 102 commune-level administrative units, including 85 communes, 14 wards and 3 special zones. Of which, 79 communes, 14 wards and 3 special zones were formed after the reorganization; 6 communes that did not undergo the reorganization are: My Hoa Hung, Binh Giang, Binh Son, Hon Nghe, Son Hai, Tien Hai.
Rach Gia City – the old provincial capital of Kien Giang was chosen as the administrative center of the new province. Here, the provincial government will complete the steps to perfect the organization, arrange personnel, facilities and operate the information technology system before June 30, 2025, to officially put the new An Giang province into operation from July 1, 2025.

A notable point is the birth of Rach Gia ward, which was merged from 9 old central wards of Rach Gia city (including Vinh Quang, Vinh Thanh, Vinh Thanh Van, Vinh Lac, Vinh Hiep, An Hoa, An Binh, Rach Soi and Vinh Loi). This ward has an area of 45.53 km², population of 250,661 people, becoming the most populous ward in the country with a density of more than 5,500 people/km², surpassing Di An ward (Di An city, Binh Duong ) before.
In addition, three special administrative units, Phu Quoc, Tho Chau and Kien Hai, are identified as special administrative-economic zones under the province, with a strong orientation towards tourism development, marine economy and international cooperation.
The new An Giang province will prioritize the development of agricultural production – processing – export value chains, attracting investment in renewable energy, developing seaport – logistics systems and training high-quality human resources. At the same time, the province aims to become the largest integrated tourism region in the West, connecting spirituality – ecology – sea and islands.
With a new organizational model, large area, large population and diverse potential, An Giang promises to become the locomotive for socio-economic development of the entire Southwest region in the coming period.

The merger of the two provinces not only helps streamline the apparatus and improve the efficiency of state management, but also opens up opportunities to form a new growth pole for the entire Mekong Delta region. According to experts, the new An Giang province, with an area of nearly 9,900 km² and a population of nearly 5 million people, will become the largest locality in the Southwest region in terms of both scale and development potential.
