Hoa Phat uses closed-loop technology to optimize production, utilize all heat sources and excess air in the steel smelting process to improve power generation efficiency and save production costs.
If converted at current electricity prices, self-generated electricity output is worth nearly 3,500 billion VND.
Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Complex is invested with modern production lines from G7 countries using closed-loop technology, helping to optimize production, taking advantage of all excess heat and gas sources in the iron and steel smelting process to improve power generation efficiency and save production costs.
Improve power generation efficiency, save production costs
Hoa Phat recovers all the excess heat in coke smelting, utilizes the excess coal gas in iron and steel smelting as fuel for boilers to generate electricity. This power generation technology has increased the competitiveness of the product, contributed to environmental protection, and reduced CO2 emissions.
As of June 30, 2025, the electricity generation output of the Thermal Power Plant of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex reached 1.45 billion kWh, helping to proactively meet over 90% of the electricity demand for production of the entire Complex.
Since July 2019, one year after the installation of the first generator, the plant's power output has met the steel production needs of the entire Complex. Cumulative power output has also increased rapidly over the years and reached the 5 billion kWh mark in September 2022, followed by the 10 billion kWh mark in February 2025.
When implementing the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 project, the company continued to invest in the second residual heat power generation line. Thermal Power Plant No. 2 has a capacity of 240MW, including 4 generators of 60MW, increasing the total power generation capacity of the entire complex to 600MW, ensuring 90% of the electricity for steel production of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 1 and Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 projects.
The total power generation capacity of the entire complex is 600MW, ensuring 90% of electricity for steel production of Hoa Phat Dung Quat 1 and Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 projects.
With a similar solution, in the first half of this year, the self-consumption power output for the Hoa Phat Hai Duong Iron and Steel Complex reached 358 million kWh. Recently, Hoa Phat Hai Duong Steel invested in renovating and replacing the synchronization cabinets of 3 turbine generators No. 1, 2, 3, so that the equipment ensures stable power generation when connected to the grid.
The residual heat power generation project not only helps save energy effectively but also contributes significantly to the strategy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for carbon neutrality. This is a sustainable solution, utilizing the residual heat source in the steel production process to generate electricity without using fossil fuels, contributing to reducing the pressure on the national grid, especially during the hottest months.
