After the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) drove the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) out of the Kursk border area, the RFAF is developing an offensive into the Ukrainian Sumy Oblast, which borders the newly Ukrainian-controlled Kursk region. The aim is to stop the repeated cross-border attacks and move the front away from Russian settlements, which are regularly shelled by AFU artillery.

Implementing Moscow's strategy of establishing a security buffer zone, since the beginning of March this year, RFAF crossed the border into the Sumy region, capturing areas along the border, adjacent to the Korenevsky and Sudzhansky districts of Kursk province; capturing the villages of Veselivka, Zhuravka, Novenke as bridgeheads, to advance into Ukrainian territory.

On the direction of the bridgehead attack from Novenke, the RFAF developed and captured the villages of Basivka, Loknya and Yablunivka; created a siege of the village of Yunakovka, the logistics, supply and troop transfer center for the AFU in Kursk, located on the R200 (H07) highway from Sudzha to the city of Sumy.

This village is also important for the RFAF, as it is an important bridgehead for the Russian army to continue to develop its offensive and expand its control over the territory of Ukraine. Especially after clearing Yunakovka and its surroundings, the RFAF artillery will be able to attack the city of Sumy, because from here to the city of Sumy is only about 35 km.

Deep State Channel in a military analysis of the situation in Ukraine, showed that when AFU was pushed out of Russia's Kursk province, it put Sumy province in a state of emergency, as Russian troops implemented a "slow but steady" strategy, attacking and gaining control of each Ukrainian village on the Sumy border.
6-1011.jpg
The Deep State said the RFAF had succeeded in establishing footholds along major transportation routes and the disputed area between Russia and Ukraine, which was initially considered a “gray zone,” had begun to be marked as Russian-controlled territory.
7-5833.jpg
Faced with the above situation, AFU could not sit still, they tried to organize counterattacks to push the Russian troops out of the villages by using FPV UAVs, but the RFAF's artillery and air force firepower here was too strong, causing AFU's counterattacks to fail.

Although the Russian troops in Sumy also suffered losses, with their numerical advantage, they still successfully pushed the front line back to the outskirts of some settlements. Currently, some villages on the border of Sumy Oblast have gradually been recognized as Russian-controlled areas.

Russian military expert Andrei Marochko also confirmed that Russian troops have broken through Ukraine's defenses in the Sumy border area and entered Yunakovka. Currently, RFAF's long-range firepower has covered the main traffic routes of Yunakovka and Oreshnya, which further hinders the AFU's mobile reinforcement plan here.

Former commander of the Azov Battalion, and now lieutenant colonel of the AFU, deputy commander of the 3rd Azov Independent Strike Brigade, Maksim Zhorin, codenamed “Mose”, said that the buffer zone in some border areas is a disaster for Ukraine. According to Zhorin, the AFU needs to prepare for the battle to defend Sumy and Kharkov.

According to the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the RFAF’s Northern Group, with 70,000 troops, hundreds of armored vehicles and artillery, is dedicated to the attack on Sumy and Kharkov. In general, the AFU must be very cautious when sending troops back to the Donetsk battlefield or not?
12-1841.jpg
According to Lieutenant Colonel Maksim Zhorin, the AFU needs to prepare for street battles in both cities (Sumy and Kharkov). Or the Russian army will take control of a significant part of the territory that the Ukrainian army recaptured in the fall of 2022.
13-6683.jpg
In fact, the threats to Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast or Kharkov have been around for a long time. In previous analyses, we concluded that the Ukrainian army in Kursk was doomed to lose. As Russian troops completely recaptured the Ukrainian-controlled Kursk Oblast, tens of thousands of Russian troops began to advance toward the border of Sumy Oblast.
14-1020.jpg
However, the actions of the Russian army in Sumy are also unclear, perhaps they are resting and preparing for a major campaign. But now that Russia has proposed the goal of establishing a "buffer zone", large-scale operations of the Russian army have naturally begun.
15-7300.jpg
This is also why Kiev's "Kursk Operation" is considered a bad move, because Ukraine forced the opening of a new front, when its own strength was not enough. In theory, Kiev's operation was to hold back the main attack plan of the Russian army in Donetsk, when part of the Russian army had to return to defend the Kursk Oblast.

But since Russia’s power far exceeds Ukraine’s, the outcome of the Battle of Kursk is no longer in doubt. Moreover, Russia has now returned the battlefield to Sumy Oblast, and how Ukraine will respond has become a major issue. If the AFU cannot hold out, Ukraine is likely to lose Sumy Oblast.
