History of glorious victories
Historical documents record that Ha Tinh city today is a land that has existed since the time of the founding of the country, belonging to Van Lang country, Hung Vuong period. In 1831, the 12th year of Minh Mang, the king established Ha Tinh province, and the provincial capital of Ha Tinh was also formed from that time. After many changes in administrative units, in 1875, the capital moved to Trung Tiet commune. This is the place where the provincial government is located. Thanh Sen is a name associated with a folk legend, reminding us of a land with sacred energy, rich in cultural and historical traditions.
194 years since its establishment, Thanh Sen's history has been closely linked to the history of the country; every period and every stage has been marked with glorious achievements, with outstanding people who were not afraid of hardships and were ready to sacrifice for the independence and freedom of the nation.
During the resistance war against the French, the people of the town stood shoulder to shoulder in successfully carrying out the local scorched earth resistance, firmly holding the rear, supplying goods and rice, and calling on young people to join the army to advance to the South. Among the more than 212,000 people who went to work as civilian laborers on the front lines and more than 30,500 young people who joined the army of the province and the town, there were more than 1,000 people added to the campaigns, contributing to the resounding victory of Dien Bien Phu (1954).
Entering the resistance war against the US, Ha Tinh town was both the rear and the front line. Thanh Sen land honors 10 female militiamen of Nai mountain, 48 children of Thanh Dong quarter and militiamen on duty at Dong bridge, Cay bridge, Phu bridge, Nai mountain. Members of Hop Luc and Dong Luc cooperatives both produced and directly loaded goods and rice to transport to the South. Workers and drivers of the automobile company delivered goods every night via Ben Thuy ferry, Gianh river... with the spirit of "not a pound of rice missing, not a soldier missing", "if the vehicle has not passed, the house will not regret".
In particular, the victory on March 26 and March 31, 1965 at Nai Mountain is considered the first victory over the US, contributing to encouraging the spirit of the whole country determined to defeat the foreign invaders.
Colonel Tran Hau Tam - former Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Provincial Military Command recalled: “I started joining the army in 1972, in Battalion 20, Anti-Aircraft Artillery - Provincial Military Command, regularly fighting at key positions such as: intersections, bridges, ferries... places where the US often bombed fiercely to cut off vital supply routes to the South.
At that time, Thanh Sen was a small town but was the focus of American attacks, plowed day and night by bombs, many traffic works, bridges, and culverts were destroyed. The war was fierce, we fought the enemy day and night, sometimes 2-3 battles a day, on duty from morning to night on the artillery platform. On sunny days, the artillery platform burned our skin, on cold winter days it cut our flesh and skin, but we were not discouraged, determined to defeat the American invaders. Joining us were the militia, youth volunteers, and engineers who cleared mines, filled bomb craters, and provided food for the soldiers. We just fought side by side to fight the enemy.
Secretary of the City Party Committee Tran Viet Ha presented gifts of gratitude to families of meritorious servicemen on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Southern Liberation Day.
To protect national independence and unify the country, the whole town had 4,812 people enlisted in the army, 2,884 people went to the youth volunteer force and the frontline laborers. During the war, 2,902 people sacrificed, 2,606 were wounded, 605 were sick, 4,900 people contributed to the revolution.
Young city moving forward
In 1991, Ha Tinh was officially re-established as a province, Ha Tinh town became the center of the provincial capital again. For more than 30 years, the central urban area from a small, poor and backward town has developed strongly with increasingly synchronous infrastructure, becoming the political , cultural and economic center of the province, the core urban area of 1 of 3 urban centers, worthy of being a regional urban area of the North Central region.
In 2024, the growth in production value will reach 12%; the total production value of all sectors (at 2010 comparative prices) will reach 18,389 billion VND; budget revenue will reach over 1,200 billion VND. With the attention of the province, the initiative, wisdom and solidarity of the city's leadership, the locality has mobilized maximum intelligence, resources and social strength to join hands in constructing and building a synchronous infrastructure, meeting the expectations of the people.
Along with large-scale projects: Priority infrastructure and urban development adapting to climate change in Ha Tinh City, the Eastern beltway project, the extended Xuan Dieu Street, the Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street to the East... the connecting axes of residential areas and the streets of residential groups are also being renovated and upgraded by the city to create a spacious, clean and beautiful appearance. In the first 3 months of 2025, the total revenue of the city's books reached 210 billion VND, equal to 54.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
Like other localities across the country, Ha Tinh City is facing a new opportunity, implementing the Project on arranging communal-level administrative units in 2025. With the spirit of "No waiting, what can be completed first must be completed", the Standing Committee of the Ha Tinh City Party Committee has directed the authorities at all levels to implement promptly, methodically and scientifically, deploying to collect people's opinions with a high rate of 98.22%. Accordingly, Ha Tinh City arranged 28 communal-level administrative units into 7 grassroots-level administrative units (including 3 wards and 4 communes), reducing 21 communal-level administrative units (reaching a rate of 75.0%).
Mr. Nguyen Trong Hieu - Chairman of Ha Tinh City People's Committee said: "In the coming time, the city will continue to mobilize the entire political system, closely following the instructions of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee to reorganize administrative units and organize local governments at 2 levels to ensure proper procedures, methodical and scientific. In particular, continue to review and complete regular tasks and socio-economic development goals, focusing on accelerating the progress of ongoing projects, urban development, especially the growth target of over 10% to create momentum for the new development stage".
The spirit of determination from the Party Committee, the government to all cadres, party members, grassroots authorities and all people, all are competing to boost production, to achieve the highest goals and plans set out.
Secretary of the City Youth Union Nguyen Phi Khanh said: “The young generation of Thanh Sen is continuing to promote the spirit of volunteering for community life, strongly promoting the vibrant and practical emulation movement, contributing to building Ha Tinh City today to be more and more beautiful and civilized. In particular, focusing on a number of key tasks such as: participating in the development of science, technology, innovation, creativity and digital transformation; encouraging young people to establish their careers and develop themselves in the new era”.
The history of Thanh Sen ancient city continues to nurture and nurture the current generation of Ha Tinh city people to continue writing rosy pages of history, entering a new era with the country.
