In the history of the U23 Southeast Asian tournaments, U23 Vietnam and U23 Indonesia have clashed twice, with each side winning once.

The first meeting between the two teams took place at the second edition of the Southeast Asian U23 Championship in 2019, in Cambodia. At that time, U23 Indonesia defeated U23 Vietnam 1-0 in the semi-final. The only goal of the match that year was scored by defensive midfielder Luthfi Kamal, in the 70th minute.

After defeating U23 Vietnam in the semi-finals, U23 Indonesia defeated U23 Thailand 2-1 in the final, thereby winning the championship. That was also the only time, up to this point, that U23 Indonesia won the U23 Southeast Asian championship.

Four years later, at the 4th Southeast Asian U23 Championship in 2023 in Thailand, U23 Vietnam won to pay off their debt against U23 Indonesia. That was the final match of that year's tournament.

Leading U23 Vietnam in 2023 is the famous coach Hoang Anh Tuan. Leading U23 Indonesia that year is also a very famous coach, Mr. Shin Tae Yong (Korean).

As a result, the two teams drew 0-0 after 120 minutes of two regular and two extra periods. U23 Vietnam won 6-5 in the penalty shootout. The only one who missed in the 6 penalty shootouts of both sides was goalkeeper Ernando Ari of Indonesia. This shot was blocked by goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan of U23 Vietnam.

Thanks to the above victory, U23 Vietnam successfully defended the championship. We became the first team to defend the championship of the U23 Southeast Asian tournament, and also the only team to date to have won the U23 championship of the region twice.

At 8:00 p.m. on July 29, at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (Jakarta, Indonesia), U23 Vietnam and U23 Indonesia will face off for the third time in the U23 Southeast Asian tournament. This is also the match that decides the winner or loser between the two teams in the history of this tournament.

If U23 Indonesia defeats U23 Vietnam, they will catch up with our record of two championships. On the contrary, if U23 Vietnam wins the final match in Indonesia, we will set a record of three consecutive championships. If that happens, it will certainly be a very difficult record to break in Southeast Asian football.
