Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital is currently conducting an important study to develop a prenatal intervention procedure for fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, using the method of tracheal occlusion through fetal endoscopy.

The 12th Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Scientific Research and Guidance Conference in 2024, organized by Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital on December 20 , attracted the participation of hundreds of doctors and obstetrics experts from the northern provinces and cities.

The event created an important forum to exchange and update new knowledge and techniques in maternal and child health care, as well as develop specialized fields such as fetal intervention and treatment of women's diseases.

Dr. Mai Trong Hung, Director of Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital spoke at the event.

Dr. Mai Trong Hung, Director of Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, shared that, as the final line in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital always focuses on directing the line, transferring techniques, and improving capacity for lower-level hospitals.

According to Dr. Hung, in recent years, the obstetrics and gynecology sector has made significant progress. Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital has successfully implemented prenatal screening programs, fetal intervention, gynecological cancer treatment, and reproductive problems such as infertility. These achievements are not only thanks to the efforts of domestic experts but also thanks to the role of line management.

"Since 2018, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital has been recognized by the Ministry of Health as a tertiary hospital and assigned to lead the line in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Today's conference is an opportunity for us to cooperate with lower-level hospitals, transfer techniques, thereby improving the quality of reproductive health care and improving the quality of the breed," emphasized Dr. Mai Trong Hung.

One of the topics that received special attention at the Conference was fetal intervention, especially fetal laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).

Dr. Phan Thi Huyen Thuong, Deputy Director of the Fetal Intervention Center, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, said that congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a rare birth defect, occurring at a rate of about 1/2,200 pregnancies.

This is a condition in which the diaphragm does not develop completely, causing the digestive organs to move into the chest cavity, causing pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension, leading to respiratory failure and high mortality rates.

Fetal endoscopic surgery, especially the FETO (Fetal Endoscopic Surgery) method, has proven to be a promising intervention in the treatment of severe and moderate cases of CDH.

Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital is currently conducting an important study to develop a prenatal intervention procedure for fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, using the method of tracheotomy via fetal endoscopy. This project will last from July 2024 to June 2027, with the goal of increasing survival rates and minimizing sequelae for newborns.

This is a defect in the diaphragm due to the thoracic and abdominal membranes not closing completely at 9-10 weeks, causing digestive organs to move into the chest cavity, causing pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension, leading to respiratory failure and high mortality rate.

According to Dr. Thuong, about 30-50% of fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia are terminated before 24 weeks, with an average survival rate of 37.7%. If the baby is born, this condition will cause long-term sequelae for the living child: oxygen dependence, asthma, bronchiectasis...

Postnatal treatment is ineffective and the child has long-term sequelae due to pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension, especially in cases of moderate and severe diaphragmatic hernia.

Therefore, percutaneous transluminal endoscopic (FETO) prenatal intervention is considered a promising intervention for severe and moderate CDH cases.

With the achievements in reproductive health care and fetal intervention, many medical experts are optimistic that the future of obstetrics in Vietnam promises to continue to develop strongly, providing advanced treatment solutions, improving the quality of life and protecting the health of mothers and children, contributing to creating a solid foundation for a healthy and sustainable generation.

In addition to the above content, at the event, Dr. Nguyen Canh Chuong, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital gave an important presentation on cervical cancer - the leading danger to women's health and life.

Many studies have shown that HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection is the main cause of cervical cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year, HPV infection causes more than 569 thousand cases of cervical cancer and about 311 thousand deaths worldwide.

In Vietnam, there are more than 4,000 new cases of cervical cancer and more than 2,000 deaths from the disease each year. Cervical cancer is currently the third most common cancer in women aged 15-44, and an average of 7 women die from the disease every day.

Early detection of cervical cancer through screening methods is important in reducing mortality and improving survival rates for patients.
