Brighten up 80-year-old's cloudy eyes with Phaco technique

(Dan Tri) - "Blurred eyes and slow legs" are natural parts of old age. But with modern medicine, even at the age of 80 or 90, light can still return, bringing with it a new joy of life when cataracts are properly treated.

When the mist covers the eyes

Coming to Thu Cuc TCI International General Hospital for examination in a state of blurred vision, eye fatigue and eye pain, Ms. VTN (82 years old) was diagnosed with grade 4 cataracts in both eyes by Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuan Loan - Deputy Head of Examination Department in charge of Ophthalmology.

Luckier than Mr. N., at Thu Cuc TCI International General Hospital, Mr. N.D.D (81 years old) was also diagnosed with stage 4 cataract by Dr. Xuan Loan, but only in the right eye. Before the examination, initially, Mr. D. only had slightly blurred vision; however, over time, the blurred vision became more and more serious, he could barely see and often had watery eyes, especially when exposed to strong light.

As for Mr. PTN (89 years old), for many years now, his eyes have been frequently blurred. Many nights, his eyes hurt and he was uncomfortable, he could not sleep. With the encouragement of his children, he decided to go to Thu Cuc TCI International General Hospital. After examination, he was diagnosed with grade 3 cataracts.

Mr. D. was diagnosed with grade 4 cataract in his right eye and needed Phaco surgery to replace the lens.

These are just a few of the countless seniors who face this disease every day.

Understanding Cataracts

Dr. Xuan Loan explains: "The lens is like a natural lens, helping to focus light onto the retina to create images. When proteins in the lens clump together into opaque patches, they block light from passing through, causing vision to gradually decline - that is cataracts."

This disease is classified into 5 degrees, from soft transparent nucleus (grade I) to hard brown-black nucleus (grade V). In the world and in Vietnam, cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness. Statistics in 2007 showed that there were about 251,700 people with complete vision loss and 373,000 people with vision less than 1/10 due to this disease.

Fortunately, this is a disease that can be effectively treated. In the early stages, patients can wear glasses to help. From stage III and above, surgery is the only option to regain light.

Phaco: 20-minute "miracle" to brighten your eyes

Today, the Phaco method has revolutionized cataract surgery. With just a small ultrasound tip, doctors can break up the cloudy lens, remove it, and replace it with an artificial lens (IOL).

Phaco is considered a safe and effective method for cataract patients.

The outstanding advantages of Phaco that make it the choice of cataract patients are that it does not require anesthesia, most only need a small topical anesthetic; the incision is extremely small (2.2-2.8 mm), no stitches are needed; no bleeding, no pain; few post-operative complications; surgery time is only 15-20 minutes.

Mr. N.D.D only needed to be monitored for 4 hours at the hospital after surgery and was able to go home the same day. His post-operative vision recovered to 7/10. The results of Mr. PTN's cataract surgery were even better. After a follow-up visit 1 month later, he regained his vision to 9/10.

For Ms. VTN, her vision improved day by day: from being able to count fingers at a distance of 0.5m, after one day of surgery, her vision improved to 5/10 and after one month it reached 8/10. "Thanks to the doctor's dedicated help, my eyes have become brighter, clearer, completely different from before the surgery," Ms. N. emotionally shared.

Don't let blurred vision be a natural part of old age.

After surgery, Mr. D's vision recovered well.

Doctor Xuan Loan emphasized: "If cataract surgery is performed promptly, the patient can completely regain vision to 8/10, 9/10, or even 10/10 if the retina is not diseased. Surgery should be performed at level III as soon as possible to avoid the disease progressing to level IV or V, making the surgery difficult and increasing the risk of complications."

Therefore, according to Dr. Xuan Loan, when there are abnormal signs such as blurred vision, eye pain, prolonged glare, etc., patients, especially elderly patients, should visit reputable medical facilities immediately to avoid the mentality that "blurred eyes, slow legs" are natural, missing the opportunity to improve eyesight and improve quality of life.

Thu Cuc TCI International General Hospital reduces 25% of Phaco surgery costs and 20% of paraclinical service costs, helping cataract patients regain their vision soon in April.
