Vietnamese sports at SEA Games 33: Good news from socializing sports

The Vietnamese sports delegation will participate in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand this December with many socialized sports. That is a good sign, an inevitable trend of sports today.

Mr. Mai Ba Hung, former Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the socialization of sports has long been considered a necessary step for Vietnamese sports to develop in a diverse and strong manner, promoting social resources through federations, associations, enterprises, etc. However, in the past, there were still many barriers, especially in the mechanism, so the socialization of sports in Vietnam was assessed as slow and not uniform nationwide.

The announcement by the Vietnam Sports Administration at the 33rd SEA Games that many Vietnamese sports will be participating in the form of socialization, that is, self-funding, shows a positive sign. The sports participating in the 33rd SEA Games in the form of socialization include e-sports, bowling, mixed martial arts, baseball, sport climbing, teqball, tug of war, jet skiing, skateboarding, and ice skating. Most of these are modern sports that are on the rise in Vietnam. It is easy to see that most of these socialized sports are invested in and strongly developed in urban areas, especially Ho Chi Minh City.

Although participating in the 33rd SEA Games with socialized funding, this group of teams is still carefully reviewed, ensuring the ability to compete for high achievements for the Vietnamese sports delegation.

The most prominent is the e-sports team when sending a strong force of 60 members to compete in December. The Vietnamese e-sports team is considered a strong team in the region when it won 4 gold medals at the 31st SEA Games in 2022. At the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, the team also won 1 gold medal and continues to aim for at least 1 gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games. Meanwhile, participating in the SEA Games for the first time, the Vietnamese mixed martial arts team is confident with the goal of winning 1 gold medal in 6 participating events. The skateboarding, ice skating, and baseball teams have also been carefully prepared through training trips and competitions domestically and internationally, ready to compete with the strongest opponents in the region.

After a short time of introduction and development in Ho Chi Minh City, teqball (soccer combined with sepak takraw and table tennis) has helped select an elite force for the first time competing at the SEA Games. In this sport, the teqball team faced the very strong host Thailand but was also ready to surprise the opponent.

A traditional sport but held for the first time at the SEA Games, tug of war also attracted attention. Although it is a performance sport and does not count for medals in the overall rankings, coach Dao Cong Thuan and his team still practice diligently every day in Ho Chi Minh City. "Professional tug of war is a sport in which athletes must have good coordination and promote the strength of the whole team. Many people think that tug of war is mainly based on the arms, but the real strength comes from the legs. We have practiced thoroughly, ready for the best performance at the 33rd SEA Games," coach Dao Cong Thuan shared.
