How to test to properly evaluate student quality?

High schools in Ho Chi Minh City have completed the 2025 high school graduation mock exam (from May 26 to 28). The schools themselves created the exam questions. Teachers from many schools commented that because it was a mock exam, the quality of the test did not reflect the actual learning ability and students did not do their best as in the real exam.

During the literature exam on the morning of May 27, Ms. LTT, an exam supervisor at a high school in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, said: "Some students only finished the test for half the time, the rest of the time they sat solving math problems on scratch paper." Many students arrived late to the exam site or skipped the exam. Mr. HLT, a homeroom teacher for grade 12 at a high school in Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City, said he had to invite the parents of a student to discuss because the student skipped the first exam. Some schools forced absent students to take make-up tests, but others only gave them reminders, thinking it was not necessary.

Currently, schools are in the grading stage. An examiner marking the literature test said: "Although the test given by the school is not too difficult, closely following the sample test of the Ministry of Education and Training, the common scores are around 5.5 - 6.5 because students do not do their best. Many students only do reading comprehension, leaving the writing section blank...". Examiners marking multiple-choice subjects also said that few have good scores like in class. "Maybe because students do not do their best on the test," commented a teacher in Tan Phu District.

This year's high school graduation mock exams in localities under the direction of the Ministry of Education and Training are very necessary because they help teachers and students gain a lot of experience for the official exam taking place near the end of June.

The 2025 high school graduation exam is the first exam for studying and taking exams according to the new 2018 program. Therefore, the number of subjects and exam sessions have changed, students take exams according to their choice, there is the participation of two groups of students (according to the 2006 and 2018 programs)... so the organization of the exam needs to be rehearsed. This year, 12th grade students take the exam according to the new program for the first time, so it is inevitable that they will have concerns and worries.

Mock exams, if taken seriously like real exams, are very necessary, helping students get used to them and become more confident, helping them review the lessons correctly, and knowing how to do the test effectively for the upcoming real exam.
