Diversify customer sources

Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa is a major tourist center of Vietnam, attracting a large number of international visitors. However, due to many objective and subjective factors, the international tourist market of Khanh Hoa tourism is unbalanced. Before the Covid-19 epidemic, the number of Chinese visitors accounted for more than 70% of the province's international visitors, Russian visitors accounted for about 10%... In recent years, Chinese and Russian visitors have seriously decreased, South Korea has become the largest international tourist market of Agarwood tourism. In 2024, Khanh Hoa welcomed about 4.8 million international visitors, including more than 2.4 million Korean visitors (accounting for about 50% of the province's international visitors). Therefore, Khanh Hoa tourism industry has made efforts to promote and diversify the international tourist market towards sustainable tourism development.

Khanh Hoa tourism industry also has many promotional activities to target potential markets such as Australia, India, Japan. Initially, these efforts have brought about results. The most noticeable is that airlines have restored direct flights from Russia to Cam Ranh, increased flights from Kazakhstan to Cam Ranh...".

Thanks to the diversification of the tourist market, the number of international visitors to Khanh Hoa has increased significantly in recent times. The source of visitors is increasingly diverse. According to a report by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in the first 4 months of 2025, Khanh Hoa welcomed nearly 1.8 million international visitors (accounting for 50% of the province's tourists), an increase of 11.6% over the same period last year. Notably, the market of visitors from Russia and CIS countries (countries that separated from the former Soviet Union) has recovered. In April, Cam Ranh International Airport served 288 take-offs and landings with 68,173 visitors from CIS countries (including Russian visitors), double that of March.

According to information from Cam Ranh International Terminal Joint Stock Company, currently, airlines: Azur Air, Aeroflot, Ir Aero Airlines... are operating about 14 flights/week from Russia to Cam Ranh. According to the plan, Red Wings Airlines and Fun and Sun Vietnam Co., Ltd. will cooperate to operate charter flights from Russian cities (Kazan, Moscow, Krasnoyarsk and Yekaterinburg) to Cam Ranh with a frequency of 5-6 flights/week from May 11. Along with the Russian tourist market, the Central Asian tourist market is developing well. Air Astana, Vietjet Air, Scat Airlines are operating 17 flights/week from Kazakhstan to Cam Ranh. Centrum Air and Qanot Sharq airlines are operating charter flights from Uzbekistan to Cam Ranh with a frequency of 4 flights/week. The Kyrgyzstan market has also joined with Aero Nomad with a frequency of 2 flights/week.

Can not be subjective

In 2025, Khanh Hoa aims to welcome 11.8 million visitors, of which international visitors account for 5.2 million. Although the number of international visitors to Khanh Hoa has increased quite high recently, however, according to a source from Cam Ranh International Terminal Joint Stock Company, flights and the number of visitors from Korea to Cam Ranh decreased significantly in April. Specifically, in April, Cam Ranh International Airport served 1,062 flights with 176,018 visitors, down 24% compared to March (300 flights, down more than 54,000 visitors). The average number of flights from Korea to Cam Ranh decreased from 22 to 18 flights/day. Representatives of some hotels specializing in serving Korean guests said that the number of Korean visitors has been decreasing recently. Similarly, the Chinese tourist market has not grown as well as expected. Currently, airlines: Urumqi Air, Donghai Airlines, Qingdao Airlines, Cambodia Airways have all stopped charter flights from Lanzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Qingdao, Haikou to Cam Ranh. The number of flights from China to Cam Ranh has decreased from 13 flights/day to 7 flights/day.

Mr. Pham Minh Nhut - Chairman of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa Tourism Association said that the international tourist market in Khanh Hoa is quite stable. The decrease in the Korean tourist market may be just a matter of time, because this is usually the low season for Korean tourists. However, Khanh Hoa tourism industry must not be subjective but needs to increase promotion and build new products to attract tourists from Korea in particular and international tourists in general. In the near future, Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa Tourism Association will have a trip to promote Khanh Hoa tourism in Taiwan (China). Khanh Hoa province will also have a trip to promote investment, trade and tourism in Australia.

It can be said that diversifying international visitor sources is a strategic solution for sustainable development of Khanh Hoa tourism. When drafting the Plan to implement the Khanh Hoa tourism development strategy for the period 2025 - 2030, with a vision to 2045, experts from Gratiya (a consulting unit from Dubai, UAE) proposed 6 strategic solutions, in which diversifying the visitor market is the first and most important solution. "The serious decline of Khanh Hoa tourism when the Covid-19 epidemic occurred has shown the danger of being heavily dependent on certain visitor markets. It would be better if Khanh Hoa tourism could diversify its visitor sources, targeting high-spending visitor markets," said Ms. Su Ramanathan - a senior expert from Gratiya.
